The USA needs some of that global warming:

One of the longest cold-air outbreaks in decades is about to get even colder,

with record temps as far south as Florida

Millions of people in the United States are in the middle an exceptional cold stretch — one of the longest in decades for some — and it’s only going to get more brutal headed into next week.

More than 200 daily cold temperature records could be broken from Friday through Monday across the eastern half of the US as temperatures plunge further with a new push of bitter air.

Temperatures this weekend could drop more than 30 degrees below normal in spots, especially in the South and East.

The worsening of already deadly cold is harrowing news for anyone without access to power and shelter, not to mention the wallets of people paying to keep warm.

Continued cold in storm’s aftermath
Last weekend’s historic winter storm and the brutal cold that followed have been blamed for at least 50 deaths in the US, the Associated Press reported.

More than 350,000 homes and businesses in the South caught in the cold’s vice-like grip have no power as of Wednesday, according to PowerOutage.us. Some have been without it for four days following the storm.

It’ll be a race against the clock to restore power here before even colder temperatures hit.

Russia and Ukraine need some global warming too:

Record snowfall leaves cars stuck and people stranded in Russia's Far East
Parts of Russia's Far East have been buried under its heaviest snowfall in 60 years,
as scientists say the winter blast could be due to climate change affecting Arctic air patterns.

In Kamchatka Peninsula, locals were seen shovelling in the streets, as rescuers helped people trapped in their homes.

Public transportation was partially suspended in the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, after the height of the snow reached approximately 10 feet.

Ukraine endures its bitterest winter as Russia targets heating and power

Kyiv faces severe power outages amid harsh winter
City mayor says Russian strikes aim to break Ukrainians' spirit
Attacks have become more frequent and concentrated
Western partners rush in generators, batteries to cover outages
Ukraine says the strikes show Moscow has no interest in peace

KYIV, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Collecting snow for water at home; sleeping in gloves, coats and hats; heating bricks on gas stoves for warmth; erecting tents indoors - Kyiv residents are doing everything they can to survive the coldest, darkest winter of the war.

"When there is no electricity, there is no heating: it means the apartment freezes," said Anton Rybikov, father of three-year-old David and two-year-old Matvii, speaking to Reuters in their home, where he and his wife Marina have stocked up on backup batteries and sleeping bags.

Global warming increases temperature... that's bad
Global warming increases precipitation, more rain sometimes more snow... That's bad.

Except when it doesn't snow hard enough. That's bad.

And of course global warming increases drought...that's bad.

Extreme cold in New York City leaves 18 dead.

A total of 18 people have died as a result of a period of extreme cold weather in New York City, its mayor has said.

Since late January, the city has endured a cold snap, including 13 days of temperatures of 0C (32F) or below – one of the longest stretches of sub-zero weather New York has seen in six decades.

Over the weekend, another person "lost their life on the streets of our city," Zohran Mamdani said on Monday, adding that "each life lost is a tragedy, and we will continue to hold their families in our thoughts".

While temperatures are set to rise this week, they remain below average, with Mamdani telling residents to "stay safe, stay indoors... [and] keep looking out for one another".

A 13-day streak of temperatures being at 0C or below -one of the longest streaks for New York City since 1963 - ended on Friday after temperatures briefly tipped above 0C.

NYC's Emergency Management agency said that following days of extreme cold and snow pose serious safety risks remained across the city.

It warned that melting snow and ice could fall from buildings without warning and that streets and pavements could refreeze overnight.

Millions under blizzard warnings as dangerous winds
and whiteout conditions slam the Northeast

Updated 3:26 AM EST,       Mon February 23, 2026

The latest

• Potentially historic snow: A high-impact bomb cyclone is slamming the Northeast, bringing heavy snow to areas from Virginia to Maine and putting more than 40 million people under blizzard warnings. Places hardest hit could see up to two feet of snow, with more than a foot expected in Philadelphia, New York and Boston — the most seen in years for some.

• Impossible travel: Treacherous whiteout conditions have prompted public transit pauses, travel bans and warnings to stay off roads as the storm worsens overnight. Around 8,000 flights have already been canceled, the majority of which were flights in and out of New York City’s airports, according to FlightAware.

• State of emergency in NYC: A citywide travel ban is in effect overnight and the city canceled school Monday, its first proper snow day since 2019, in anticipation of what could be its biggest snowstorm in years.
