Why would any Democrat step forward as the candidate right now anyway?
To start with, the right threw an absolute tantrum when Harris stepped up after the primaries once Biden withdrew. That alone makes it obvious the Democrats need to select their nominee properly this time, through the primaries and the full process. Anything else would be premature and strategically foolish.
But more importantly, we are still very much in the "give Trump more rope" phase. Let him use it.
Let him expose himself. Let him demonstrate, repeatedly, to everyone orbiting him, that his loyalty is entirely transactional. The moment you do what he demands and it dents his polling, he will abandon you without hesitation. The people who thought his protection extended to immunity need to learn the same lesson as the voters who put him there, they need to find out.
As for the Democrats, a large portion of their base will not tolerate another attempt at "turn the page" politics.
They do not want a candidate who promises to move on, to treat Trump's actions as an unfortunate chapter best left behind, as Biden attempted to do, for the sake of unity.
After everything that has happened, particularly in just the past year, a Democratic candidate with genuine, broad appeal will have to do the opposite.
They will need to go after Trump and his entire network of enablers. They will need to do precisely what they are endlessly accused of, using the law to hold those criminals accountable for their crimes and unconstitutional behaviour.
Bring on the lawfare.
There is no power in unity with people who never respected the rules to begin with. The public does not want reconciliation, they want accountability. They want consequences. They want those responsible held to account and imprisoned for what they did.
Biden's unifying approach did not heal the system, it emboldened those who thrive on bad faith and impunity. Given that outcome, it is hard to argue against the alternative.
Investigate. Charge. Prosecute. Imprison them. Every last one.
