Sun releases the largest solar radiation storm ‘in over 20 years,’
forecasters say

Updated 4 hr ago

Powerful solar activity released by the sun is heading for Earth and it’s likely to create dazzling auroral displays in unexpected areas Monday evening and early Tuesday morning. It could also disrupt satellite-based communications and GPS accuracy.

A solar radiation storm, ranked at a level four out of five on a severity scale, is being tracked by the National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center, or SWPC.

“An S4 severe solar radiation storm is now in progress - this is the largest solar radiation storm in over 20 years,” SWPC shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The last time S4 levels were observed was in October, 2003. Potential effects are mainly limited to space launch, aviation, and satellite operations.”

Aurora borealis, or northern lights, produced by a solar geomagnetic storm
are seen from Shenandoah National Park in Rileyville, Virginia, in October 2024.

https://au.news.yahoo.com/major-aurora-australis-alert-for-millions-of-aussies-a...

A powerful geomagnetic storm is set to light up the night sky all around Australia in vivid colours. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a rare alert that a "severe geomagnetic storm" is in progress, which may be seen in nearly every state.

It is the strongest solar radiation storm in over 20 years, since October 2003. The powerful weather event is expected to trigger the stunning aurora Australis, also known as the southern lights.

And Swinburne astrophysicist Dr Kirsten Banks told Yahoo News Australia this alert in particular is "very exciting".

Is it the End Times?

Ragnarök (or Ragnarok) is the prophesied "Twilight of the Gods" in Norse mythology,
a cataclysmic end-of-world event involving a great battle, natural disasters,
and the death of major gods, leading to the world's submersion and eventual rebirth,
with survivors repopulating a cleansed Earth.

Quote:
The Northern Lights weren’t just beautiful to the Norse — they were alive. Many believed the aurora was the flaming armor of Valkyries as they rode across the sky, choosing who would live and who would die in battle. To others, it was a fiery omen of bloodshed.

The End Times = the beginning of the New Times.

If it turns into a Carrington Event we won't have electricity for months.

Like in "good old times"  Wink

Seriously though, pedal generator for lights and portable radio communication can be used but have to be simple without microcircuits.
Most of modern vehicles will be stuffed.

When we've had previous internet outages the petrol stations wouldn't work -
no one could get petrol.

We are too reliant on electronics.

Yes, never should forget old ways like siphon hose and gravity feed from 44gal drums.

Well - the petrol stations don't run like that and never will.

They should have back up batteries for the fuel pumps and
we should be able to pay by cash when the cash register is down.
They can't do either now.
Our preparation for a Carrington Event is zero.

We used to pick up few dozens 44gal drums from fuel depot when going to bush for a month or three.
It is better to be ready then sorry.
I think even in over-civilized Victoria farmers still have big fuel storage tanks for to keep machinery going without traveling to town too often.
