Worker dies in Central Queensland mine following roof collapse

Authorities were called to the complex — just north of Blackwater — at about 3pm on Friday after reports of a roof collapse.

A worker has been found dead more than 24 hours after a roof collapsed at a central Qld mine, trapping him underground.

Queensland's Acting Mines Minister Tony Perrett said emergency responders found the deceased worker at the Mammoth Mine near Blackwater on Saturday night.

"Tragically, that worker could not be saved," he said.

Emergency services were called to Mammoth's underground mine at the Curragh Mining Complex at about 3pm on Friday, following reports of a roof collapse.

"One worker was safely recovered yesterday, while specialist teams worked through the night to stabilise the site and access the second individual," Mr Perrett said.

"I want to thank the Queensland Mines Rescue Service, Queensland Police and all emergency personnel involved in the recovery operations for their professionalism and dedication under difficult and dangerous conditions."

Coal
There are three mines at the Curragh mining complex, including the Mammoth Underground and two open-cut mines.

A spokesperson for Resources Safety and Health Queensland said "loss of life in mining operations is unacceptable", and it would "conduct a thorough investigation into the nature and cause of this incident".

A spokesperson for Mammoth Underground Mine Management said it was "heartbreaking news for our workmate's family and friends, and all of us at Mammoth Underground".

"We have spoken with his family to offer our sympathy and full support as they begin to come to terms with this tragic loss," the statement said.

"The safety and wellbeing of everyone at the mine is our most important priority and we will continue to support all Mammoth personnel who are affected by the incident.

"A second worker at the site of the incident was unharmed. He was taken to hospital as a precaution and has been released.

"Mammoth Underground is providing its full support for the investigation and mining operations will remain suspended until further notice."


The Curragh mine complex supplies metallurgical and thermal coal to power stations to produce electricity for the state.

Mr Perrett also said, in a separate incident, a man had died at a small-scale gold operation outside Nebo yesterday afternoon, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances.

It is understood he was hit by falling rocks.

"This is a devastating time for Queensland's mining communities," he said.

"My heartfelt condolences go out to the families, friends and colleagues of both workers.

"These are tragic reminders of the risks faced by those who work in our resources sector."

He said he expected "full and thorough investigations into both incidents to ensure answers are provided and lessons are learned".
