Albo announces gun buyback scheme
Dec 19th, 2025 at 11:47am

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-12-19/prime-minister-announces-national-gun-buy...

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a national gun buyback scheme, labelling it the largest such measure since John Howard established a similar plan in the wake of the Port Arthur massacre.

...

The buyback initiative would be consistent with the 1996 approach, Mr Albanese told reporters in Canberra on Friday, and target surplus, newly banned and illegal firearms.

Strengthening gun laws was the government's first major commitment in the immediate aftermath of the deadly terror attack on Sydney's Jewish community, in which 15 people including a 10-year-old girl were killed.

Mr Albanese said the government would introduce legislation to provide the funding for the buyback initiative and that the Commonwealth would split the cost with the states and territories on a 50:50 basis.

The states and territories would also be responsible for the collection, processing and payments under the prime minister's proposal, while the Australian Federal Police would manage the destruction of the weapons.

It may come as a shock to learn there are more guns in Australia now than there were before the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

I hope they crush them with a hydraulic press in front of the owner?

Some guns in past buybacks ended up back on the streets via corrupt cops.

Yeah, but not dealing with the root of the problem - Islamic extremism and anti-semitism.

You don't think that Israel murdering over 70,000 innocent Palistinians helps to drive anti-semitism ?

That isn't an excuse for the disgusting events at Bondi - its just an inconvinient fact and likely the current most likely driver for the disgraceful level of anti-semitism that we have been seeing.

You don't think that near-constant attacks by Hamas on Israel, missile barrages and the October 7 attack might have finally tipped Israel over the edge? Hamas fired 3,000-5,000 rockets into Israeli territory on the morning of October 7. I'm not saying that the Israeli response has been entirely acceptable. Far too many innocent Palestinian people have died, but that is largely due to Hamas using their own innocent civilian population as human shields. This isn't conjecture - it's a well known and agreed upon fact that Hamas has done this for a long time.

Israeli people just want to live in peace, but not Hamas. They will not rest until they achieve their ultimate goal of the destruction of Israel. That's all they exist for.

That is Israeli propoganda that isn't supported by the facts. They mostly bombed areas where they knew there was no Hamas presence, they were deliberately targeting innocents most of the time.

Of course what happened on Oct 7 was a disgrace but deliberately killing innocent people who had nothing to with it is hardly a justifyable response. All they achieved was to unnecessarily incentivise a world wide negative  anti-semetic response possibly contributing to events like Bondi. Just plain dumb.

The way to create peace is never by creating a few hundren thousand more active enemies. Each of those dead 70,000 plus have several family members who will now understandably continue this violence over the next generations.

They have only made it worse. They have only made the world less safe, They have only made their own people less safe.
