Been telling yez since Sunday - M-4 in the boot. Short, light weight, manageable in a tight spot, excellent sights, high rate of fire, selection between semi and full auto or three round burst, adequate range, choice of ammunition, ability to put rounds on target quickly and accurately.
Shotgun as well.
Recruiting ex-military personnel is a good idea.
I see no reason for a trained officer to need auto fire capabilities. A shotgun has probably too short a range in that situation. But it does point to governments rhetoric about the number of firearms required for different circumstances, One calibre will not serve, adequately, different purposes.
Tactically auto fire can serve to keep their heads down, and provide opportunity for tactical movement. If they know they are up against something like that, their courage can desert them very quickly. It's one thing to fire at people who cannot shoot back, but when they know they are up against a serious weapon in the hands of someone trained, they often suffer yellow pants.
Shotgun is better for close quarters... tends to pacify the area quickly. Also knocks door hinges out pretty well..
Both in the boot provide a choice of dominant weapons to suit the situation.
Pre-emptively, knowing police have those kinds of weapons on call tends to quiet down the planners.... prevention is better than cure.
The biggest problem is ensuring the security of weapons in cars.
