Reckon there's a lot of Australians living in Russia, especially miners.
Just as there are many Russians living here.

I haven't heard about Australian miners in Russia but won't be surprised if there are some.
As for Russians in Australia, yes, there have been quiet a few.
One of the more remarkable was "Russian Jack".

Quote:
Ivan Fredericks, a Russian sailor from Archangelsk, migrated to Western Australia in 1886 and decided to go prospecting in the Kimberley Region. He was noted for his enormous height and stamina as well as his friendly nature and concern for others. Within a few years Ivan Fredericks became known to the people of the Outback as “ Russian Jack” and was easily recognised by his homemade wheel barrow loaded with all his worldly possessions which never left his presence.

“Russian Jack “ epitomised the mateship of the early settlers and miners and earned himself a place in Australian history when he walked off his gold claim to assist an injured miner and carried him in his wheel barrow 300 kilometres to the nearest doctor. Many other acts of Christian charity have been attributed to this gentle giant. In Hall’s Creek a monument was erected in tribute to “Russian Jack” by the local community.

Anyway, I started this thread to show the difference how Australians who travel to Russia for whatever reason see reality in comparison to those who base their fantasies on fake news media.

So here is another case
Quote:
My thoughts on Russia after 1 month of being here.
Does Russia look strange or feel unsafe to an Australian?
What does life look like here and has the perception changed after 1 month?

Another Aussie, another story, the same place.

Quote:
Five years ago, I left Australia and moved to Russia — and it completely changed my life. 🇦🇺➡️🇷🇺

In this video, I share why I moved to Russia and what life in a Russian eco-village is really like — from building our off-grid homestead and growing food to raising our family close to nature. If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping the city, living simply, and finding real freedom, this story will inspire you to see life differently.

You’ll discover what daily life in Russia is actually like, how we built our home by hand, and why this move brought us more peace, purpose, and connection than we ever imagined.

Reckon Tourism Australia and Russia could capitalise on hot Outback Australians having a holiday in Siberia and Siberian Russians experiencing a holiday in the Outback.

There were two twenty-year-old Australians who travelled for fourteen months on recumbent bicycles from Russia, across Siberia and Mongolia in early 2000s. They made Full-length film about the journey but it isn't available on internet any longer.
Only short summary here

You also can get their book
https://www.amazon.com.au/Off-Rails-Bicycle-Siberia-Mongolia/dp/1408852551

As for Russians experiencing the Outback - I've been there and done that for 15 years starting in north western Australia some 400km south east from Onslow in summer time looking for uranium on subcontract for French company.

When temperature 54C in shade and there is no shade.

Australian couple holidaying in Siberia easy way.

Swimming in Outdoor Pool in -30°C, Explore Russian Village & New Hotel!

Natasha and Patric are trying to learn Russian language so here is Natasha's transcript in English:
Quote:
Feb 22, 2025
This is the final video from our incredible journey to Altai, and what a trip it has been! The location where we stayed was absolutely stunning—the hotel was lovely, and the pool, in particular, was incredibly relaxing. One thing I’ve observed about Russians, in general, is how quiet and reserved they are in public spaces. It’s rare to hear someone speaking loudly, and when it does happen, it really stands out. This sense of calm extended to the resort as well, where even with several guests around, the atmosphere remained peaceful and serene.

What continues to amaze me about Russia is the incredible hospitality. The kindness and generosity of the people here are unmatched—they will give up their own bed for a guest, cook endless meals, and fulfill any request without hesitation. I’ve truly felt welcomed in every way. After a week of indulging in home-cooked meals and an unreasonable amount of desserts (because saying no isn’t an option here!), I knew it was time to get back on track. Thankfully, I have Patrick to keep me accountable! As a personal trainer, he always knows how to reset my routine and get me feeling healthy again—sometimes before I even realize I need it. Which is exactly what I needed after this trip. Smiley

I've seen much of Australia. It's a burnt out, virulent, brittle majority of what is less, than more. It died a very long time ago.
As one NASA astronaut commented on a space doco. Australia is the Great Boring Land Mass as they see it when they pass overhead.

As I said before you have to be in right place at right time.
Deserts in northern Australia gave me some experiences I rank as best in my life like desert bloom and sun rise with full moon on opposite side going down, two huge disks of gold and silver with colour of sky above beats any polar light in Barents and White seas.
The NASA astronaut wouldn't see it from above and wouldn't feel that air that just start to move up from sand as sun is rising. The rarity of such events only adds up to the effect.

But of course the beauty is in the eye of beholder so not everyone would feel the same  Wink

But overall, Australia - most of the time, is as beige as the 1970-80s NZ one day cricket team with rust thrown in.

There was more snow then that when I was kid. We used to dig tunnels in a snowdrift playing snow version of hide and seek, one time  my tunnel collapsed on me and I was buried under 4 meters of snow, it was fun to dig out.

To stack in sand on beach at mercy of crabs, sand worms and midges is worse, IMHO.

Cool.
The best we have here are Medieval and Viking festivals.
At least people here are learning how to deal with Sudanese, etc.
It's a start.

Way cool. Last year I watched a lot of abandoned location clips of exploration. Most of them were themed on supernatural and ghost (hoaxing) publicity which can sometimes be entertaining. Mostly Russian and USA. USA mostly had negro bums residing in them and a lot of it vandalised and being full of scrappers for $$. The Russian sites were more pristine like that one.

In my younger days I would prowl sites all around Sydney. No place could keep me out. My favourites were the old Pyrmont Powerhouse Station (where Google was thinking about building there), the now gone Glenquarrie Quarry, turned landfill tip and inner city tall buildings under construction (got heaps of tools).

The best time to prowl is in the rain.
No-one can hear you, see you or want to go out and look for you.
Many a time in downpour, I passed just metres in front of Security and even cops in their cars or entry boxes.
Hell, me and a mate walked right past security sleeping at the Lodge in Kirribilli when Keating was PM. We lived 4 doors down. The cops always did a round at 3am on the dot. Three days later on the front page Daily Telegraph was a picture of the sleeping guard. Obviously they reviewed their camera footage.  Grin Grin

Very good Russian SF movie about this

Quote:
Based on the novel "Roadside Picnic" by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (probably the best Russian SF writers). The Zone that arose on Earth for unknown reasons attracts attention with inexplicable phenomena that occur there. A rumor has spread that in the center of the Zone there is something that gives a person everything he wants. But staying in the Zone is deadly, and therefore it is strictly guarded. There, each for their own reasons, the Writer and the Professor go, the Stalker leads them to the mysterious center, feeling and understanding the Zone

Have you seen the Polish Escape to the Silver Globe?

Made in the Soviet 1980s. It's as mad a sci fi as you can get. Some footage was taken by authorities and lost, which resulted in the director just adding in him walking around a polish city narrating into the storyline. This movie was hidden for a long time.

Was chatting with a lady yesterday whose son has been fighting for Ukraine for three years now.  Interesting stories.

Told her of that Polish guy who was asked - "How does it feel to kill a human being?"... and he replied... "I have no idea - I only kill communists."

Sounds like Nazi propaganda in WW2 except it was "kill communists.and Jews".

Of course the fact is that Russia got rid of communism 36 years ago.

Australian couple living in Russia! 🇦🇺🇷🇺
When they first set off on this journey, they made a private promise to stay in Russia for at least one full year.

Quote:
It feels like summer has quietly slipped away, and we’re amazed at how quickly the seasons turn here in Russia. People often ask me, “When is the best time to visit Russia?” My honest answer is always the same — don’t come here for the weather. Come for the experience. Because no matter the season, Russia has a way of surprising you with its beauty.
