The sun
Nov 26th, 2025 at 11:26am

I started this here: http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1675564365/0#0

After some stupid, pointless and unjustified ban I started keeping the observations in my fine forum. Have to protest somehow and asking for the reason for a ban is never answered, probably because there is no real reason.

However, I have decided to copy the figures to here from this afternoon. Since we do not have an Environment board it seems to be up to me to post on environmental issues.

Oh yeah, the high school dropout told me I should post the solar observations in his toilet of a board. I told the lazy idiot to post the observations himself!

Of course, the idiot banned me from his toilet of a board  so I would not have been able  to keep the observation record going. What a clown!

BIG SUNSPOT ALERT: A potentially dangerous sunspot is emerging over the sun's southeastern limb. Yesterday, while it was still partially eclipsed by the edge of the sun, it produced an impulsive M6-class solar flare (shown below). The true value of the flare may have been X-class.

{image}

This appears to be the same behemoth sunspot that Mars rover Perserverance saw from Jezero Crater last week. Now it is turning toward Earth. Strong geoeffective flares are increasingly likely as the sunspot lines up with our planet in the days ahead.

REALLY BIG SUNSPOT ALERT: Yesterday, we issued a big sunspot alert. We were wrong. It's *really* big. This image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the behemoth emerging over the sun's southeastern limb on Nov. 30th:

NASA's Mars rover told us it was coming. Last week, Perserverance saw the giant sunspot through a cloud of dust in Jezero Crater. It was only days away from turning toward Earth--and now it is here.

From end to end, the sunspot group measures ~130,000 km, and at least four of the sunspot's primary dark cores are individually larger than Earth. These dimensions make it an easy target for safely-filtered backyard telescopes. If you don't have a solar filter, try this simple projection technique instead.

On Nov. 29th, amateur astronomer Andy Devey watched the sunspot's approach from his observatory near Mojácar, Spain:

"This is an almost three hour look at the active region rolling around the sun's eastern limb," says Devey. "It was sizzling with C-class solar flares."

On Nov. 28th, the sunspot produced an M6-class solar flare. However, the blast site was partially eclipsed by the edge of the sun. The flare's true intensity may have been X-class. Now that the sunspot is turning to face Earth, future flares will be geoeffective.

X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE (PERHAPS THE FIRST OF MANY): We were expecting an X-flare today, but this one surprised us anyway. At 0249 UTC, new sunspot 4295 produced an X2-class solar flare, shown here in an extreme ultraviolet image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

The surprise? The flare did not come from giant sunspot group 4294-96 now emerging in the sun's southern hemisphere. The actual source, northern sunspot 4295, appeared to be small and harmless until it exploded.

The flare ionized Earth's upper atmosphere and caused a shortwave radio blackout directly above Australia. A coronal mass ejection (CME) is in the offing as well. Details await fresh data from SOHO and NOAA coronagraphs.

With multiple sunspots posing a threat, more X-flares are very likely this week.

X1, X2 flares—and there are STILL idiots babbling of being in a grand solar minimum!

EVEN CARRINGTON WOULD BE IMPRESSED: On Sept. 1, 1859, English astronomer Richard Carrington sketched the most famous sunspot in history. While Carrington was watching an image of the sun projected on a screen, the sunspot produced a blinding X45-class solar flare, followed two days later by a planet-wide geomagnetic storm. We call it the "Carrington Event."

How does today's giant sunspot compare to Carrington's? Here is the answer:

The image shows Carrington's drawing of the 1859 sunspot inserted to scale on a Dec. 2, 2025, image of sunspot complex 4294-4296. They're about the same size. The surface area of Carrington's sunspot was ~2300 millionths of the solar disk. The surface area of 4294-4296 is 2080 millionths, about 90% as large.

To be clear, 4294-4296 is actually two sunspots. Their close proximity makes them appear as a single behemoth--an unfair advantage vs. Carrington. Even so, strong explosions are likely. The crowding of the two sunspots' magnetic canopies raises the odds of reconnection and an X-flare of their own. Any explosions today will be geoeffective.

Not very GSM–like, is it?

WHY oh WHY do we not see detailed posts like this in what is
SUPPOSED
to be the Environment board? Because a high school dropout can’t mod a scientific board, stupid to think he could.

An idiot in charge of Environment, no Mods for Economics and Health: does anybody wonder why our post rate dropped by 100 posts per day?

STRONG SOLAR FLARE AND CME: New sunspot 4300 erupted today (Dec.4th @ 0250 UTC), producing a strong M6-class solar flare. At the same time, the US Air Force detected a Type II solar radio burst, which means a CME is probably emerging from the blast site. Meanwhile, giant sunspot complex 4294-4296 remains ominously quiet.

MONSTER SUNSPOT FACES EARTH: If there's no X-flare this weekend, it will be a waste of a truly monsterous sunspot. To see it, try this simple projection technique. Even Richard Carrington would be impressed. The sunspot group has an unstable delta-class magnetic field that harbors energy for geoeffective explosions

THE WRONG SUNSPOT KEEPS ERUPTING: All eyes are on monster sunspot 4294-4296, which seems poised to erupt with an epic Earth-directed flare. Instead, the "monster" is quiet and other sunspots are providing the action. On Dec. 6th, northern sunspot 4299 erupted and hurled a CME directly toward Earth. Read the details below--but don't stop watching the monster.

EARTH-DIRECTED SOLAR FLARE AND CME: It was almost an X-flare. On Dec. 6th (20:39 UTC), sunspot 4299 produced an M8-class solar flare pointing directly at Earth:

Just posting data. Interesting to track a whole cycle.

Did you know there are still idiots who think the sun is in a GSM even now?
