because they failed to character assassinate him
Trump's own character did all the heavy lifting, nobody needed to invent a single thing about him. The problem is that his supporters, MAGA in particular, are deplorables. Clinton was right.
They simply do not care that he is a convicted felon, that he stole from children's cancer charities, that he has protected those who sexually abused children if he isn't among that list himself, and that he used the Presidency to strip people of their rights, including his own supporters while acceping bribes and using the office to enrich himself and in inner circle.
He never drained the swamp, he never exposed the "deep state", he became the version he claimed existed and that he'd fight against. And you're all suckers for believing him.
He is actively working to take away their healthcare, to cut jobs directly and indirectly thanks to DOGE and his tariffs, all while driving up the cost of living, lying incessantly, and continually breaking the law.
And while he's trying to cover up the terrible numbers, it's becoming inescapable as the economy starts to hurt.
His character is utterly bereft of value, and merely reporting on it is enough for any reasonable person.
But his supporters do not care, because they are deplorable, so long as the people they despise are suffering more than they are and they can hide their MAGA hats as they line up at the food banks.
So you can sook about criticisms of Trump's character all you like, but your indifference to who he is does not transform him into a man of virtue, it merely reveals that your own character is every bit as deficient as his.
