A contractor has been killed after he was hit by a steel beam that reportedly fell from a crane in a tragic incident at the Port Kembla steelworks near Wollongong.

Emergency services rushed to the BlueScope Steel plant following reports a man had been injured about 10.30am on Monday.

Paramedics found a man in his mid 20s with serious injuries, but he could not be saved and died at the scene.

A police spokesman said an investigation into the man’s death has begun.

A preliminary assessment indicated a steel beam fell from a crane and fatally struck the worker.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner,” a spokesman said.

A SafeWork NSW spokesman said they were notified about the fatal workplace incident involving a worker at the steelworks, about 95km south of Sydney.

“SafeWork NSW inspectors are attending in response,” a spokesman said.

Paramedics found the worker seriously injured, but he could not be saved and died at the scene.

Inquiries into the man’s death are ongoing, however a spokesman from the steelworks’ operator BlueScope told NewsWire a preliminary assessment indicated a steel beam fell from a crane and fatally struck the worker.

The spokesman said emergency services were on site and they are cooperating with their investigation.

“Our immediate priority is supporting our people, the first responders and the family of those involved,” a spokesman said.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and will provide further information when we are able.”
