APY Art Centre Collective sues The Australian's publisher for defamation seeking $4.4m payout

The Aboriginal art group at the centre of "white hands on black art" allegations is suing the publisher of Rupert Murdoch's The Australian newspaper for $4.4 million.

The APY Art Centre Collective (APYACC) has alleged Nationwide News and journalist Greg Bearup defamed the internationally recognised organisation in 33 newspaper articles, according to court filings.

The paper's coverage began in 2023 with a covertly filmed 50-second clip of Tjala Arts centre manager Rosie Palmer applying paint to artist Yaritji Young's canvas and discussing creative choices with her.

Several artists and former staff of the collective told Mr Bearup they observed non-Aboriginal staff taking part in the production of artworks.

Some sources later retracted their claims but Mr Bearup reported that two artists said they were pressured into doing so.

The truth of that claim will now be tested in court.

APYACC responded at the time by saying "we strenuously deny the overarching narrative that … artists are compromised" and said it was transparent about the role art assistants played "at the artist's direction".


The reporting sparked fierce conversations witin the Australian art world, reflecting how the idea of "authenticity" was understood.



Oh, it all depend on what the meaning of " is" is. Or what the meaning of "woman" is.  Or "authentic".

And most certainly what 'Aboriginal' is.
