The Abrahamic religions have explicit cataclysm/doomsday warnings tied to moral failure, and the left wing of politics tends to be more atheist; many left-wingers adopt causes like climate change with a religious-like fervor.

It's also getting worse and accelerating.

Parenting is being delayed to later in life so there are lots of young people who in past generations would be so busy struggling to raise a family, who are now left without anything meaningful in life. Especially so for women who miss-direct their motherly protective instinct to the cause of the day.
