To evade a run-in with the Supreme Court over his right to impose blanket tariffs (a case SCOTUS is currently hearing), Trump claimed that he was faced with an 'emergency' - the one reason a president may arrogate Congressional powers to the presidency regarding tariffs.

His emergency? For public consumption, it was because Americans were being 'ripped off' by the rest of the world. Covertly, American hyper-consumerism of cheap foreign goods is driving the US into bankruptcy.

With the US dollar in decline, the options on the table to remediate the US debt crisis are limited.

Well the options weren't many.
Continue the escalating rot of extortion from Europe and Asia (Obama printing money continued the rot more so at 10% interest) and America's accelerated debt as the world's highest.

Or try something else. Trump is just trying to tighten the belt and bring down that debt. A bit hard when you have a sizeable percentage of the population who don't want to contribute and just freeload, bring in more illegals to freeload too by contributing only crime like drugs and prostitution.

Other countries have had to pull their heads in like what Trump is doing and their people have towed the line with it and it has worked. Greece and Albania are an easy two to mention. At one time Albania was only surviving on washing cars for a few years.

In times like this, only the people's contribution can save an economy more than just one person.

'The Chinese' are a people, not a country... and as a people they are pretty much us.

When people here get on their high horse about the Chinese, demonising and othering them, they use Chinese, CCP and China interchangeably... It's how you can tell the poster is full of sh!t.

The fact is, (Chinese) people need to be clothed, fed, housed, educated, serviced, attended to in sickness, employed, and given prospects for hope like... y'know... real people.

And, while the Australian government is tasked with ensuring all that for the Australian people, daily, it has to do it for under 30 million over a land mass greater than China - chocker-block with resources, making us one of the richest people in the world - the Chinese government, whether it is the CCP or whatever else one day replaces it, is tasked with the same for over one billion people.

If flexing political muscle is what it takes to make ends meet, then both governments would do it if they could and needed to.
