But, meh - nah. The South Pacific belongs to Oceania next door which is as culturally and geographically is its own, as Africa and S.America.
Our region of Sahul consists Australia, Tasmania, Melanesia ( but Fiji belongs to Oceania) and Micronesia. Basically also Indonesia up to the valid Wallace Line. Even the Phillipines because of their Flora and Fauna connection.
West of the Wallace Line is Asia and specifically the real Australasia of Sunda.
Oceania ranges from New Zealand, the Pacific Islands from Pitcairn to Hawaii (which is why Hawaii seeks independence from N.America) and onto Central America, Cuba and basically the Caribbean Islands.
Oceania is as distinctly its own region in the midst of the New World's of N.America, S.America and us here in Sahul as the Middle-East is with Asia, Africa and Europe around it.

Not only does geography, flora and fauna support this, but also culture.
Oceania is a very Leftist region in alignment with Europe, Asia and Africa.
N.America, S.America and here in Sahul are aligned with the Middle-East.
New Zealand is very different to Australia. It belongs to Oceania. We belong to Sahul.

The South Pacific is not for us to give handouts.
But PNG deserves our full support and deserve more and better, than some Lefty Media promo of N.Redneck L via exploiting our politics here.
Giving them better Military initiatives would help them more than throwing footballs if China does a Japan.
