Australian authors, including Peter FitzSimons and Jane Caro, are boycotting Adelaide Writers’ Week after pro-Palestine author Randa Abdel-Fattah was axed from the program.

Dr Abdel-Fattah was set to appear at the Adelaide Festival’s Writers’ Week to talk about her new novel, Discipline. However, the festival board issued a statement on Thursday stating she would no longer participate.

Dr Abdel-Fattah has regularly taken to social media to share her criticisms of Israel. The day after the deadly October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas in 2023, her Facebook profile photo was changed to a paratrooper in the colours of the Palestinian flag.

On Boxing Day, 2024, her X account posted: “May 2025 be the end of Israel”. She also declared, “if you are a Zionist you have no claim or right to cultural safety”.
