Jim Chalmers rolled by Albanese on superannuation
Oct 13th, 2025 at 1:11pm

Jim Chalmers has put the gear in reverse and will no longer pursue taxing unrealised capital gains in superannuation.

Instead, he will implement a three tiered taxation system for superannuation, with balances less than $3 million being taxed at the current rate of 15 percent, balances over $3 million being taxed at 30 percent and those with over $10 million being taxed at a rate of 40 percent.

Anthony Albanese obviously rolled him on his more sweeping changes which would have taxed paper profits.

These changes will now likely get support of the cross bench even without the Greens who wanted to make the legislation even more radical.

The government needs to look at spending less money instead of looking at new inventive ways of taxing.

More here:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-10-13/treasurer-announces-rework-of-stalled-sup...

13th Oct   2025

The government has bowed to pressure on its superannuation tax policy, one of the few revenue-raising measures it had promised, two years on from when it was first announced.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers confirmed he had worked with the prime minister to overhaul the proposal to increase taxes on the largest superannuation balances, which was signed off by cabinet this morning.

The government has made two key concessions that were criticisms of the bill: first, the threshold at which higher tax rates will kick in will now be indexed to inflation,
and the proposal will no longer apply to unrealised capital gains.

Jim Chalmers is a fraud. Not a real economist, he only did a PhD on the works of Paul Keating.

Full of hokey catch-phrases such as "good nick" and "uptick" etc. He is a clown.  Grin

Keating was only an accountant who did his studies at night school -
he wasn't an economist.   Embarrassed

Remember when I started using 'Snake' Chalmers as his title?  Now some politicians are taking that up....

As for Snake's policies:-

“Say, you're an Australian, aren't you?”

(nods)

“Well this policy elixir is just the thing for those who can't handle their economics!”

“What's in it?”

“Oh, I don't know, I'm only the salesman.. various things...”

“You drink it!”

“What?”

“You drink it!”

“Well – what else can you expect from a non-believer?”

Albanese Government delivers a fairer superannuation system for workers
October 13, 2025 ACTU.
The ACTU welcomes the Albanese Government changes to superannuation to make it fairer, and address inequities that were built in by previous Coalition Governments.

The Low-Income Superannuation Tax Offset (LISTO) was designed to ensure workers on low income paid less tax on their super than they did on their take-home pay, but it hadn’t been adjusted to keep up with the rest of the tax system. By lifting it, a part-time aged care worker will take home an additional $60,000 at retirement, according to Super Members’ Council modelling.

Today’s announcement means that low-income workers will not pay more tax on their super than they do on their take-home pay and will have thousands more at retirement. It gets support to those who need it most.

Today’s announcement, alongside the Government’s announcement to further rein in excessive tax concessions on the highest super balances will make the superannuation system fairer. Super is meant to deliver a universal right to a dignified retirement, not be a tax haven for the ultra-wealthy.

Quotes attributable to ACTU Secretary, Sally McManus:

“We welcome the package of measures announced today by the Treasurer, Jim Chalmers that will make our superannuation system fairer and builds on the enormous strides already taken over the last three years – the superannuation guarantee reaching 12%, paying super on pay day, putting superannuation in the National Employment Standards to stamp out super theft, and paying superannuation on Commonwealth Paid Parental Leave.

“Super has always been about everyone having a dignified retirement, not a tax minimisation scheme for the ultra-wealthy. The big winners in this announcement are around one million low-income Australians, who are mostly women, working part-time, and who will now have more money for retirement.

“They are the people who need tax concessions, not the 0.5% who already have more than $3 million in their superannuation accounts.

“The union movement is proud to have been part of establishing Australia’s superannuation system with the Keating Government. It has completely transformed the lives of retired working people over one generation.

“Our super system is the envy of the world; it has turned Australia into a net capital exporter, broken the back of the balance of payments and is transformational for the economy.

“This Government continues the work of achieving the ultimate goal, which is for all workers to have a dignified retirement.”

I don’t have a problem with government spending it’s the total poor choice of what they spend it on  and constantly budget over runs by millions for a absolute crap product or services that they choose to fund that gets my 🐐.

A huge army of very well paid public servants employed purely to manage these matters and constantly getting it wrong with zero responsibility for the millions of taxpayers ( OUR) money!
