Hackers leak Qantas data containing 5 million customer records
after ransom deadline passes

Hacker collective Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters demanded payment in return for preventing the stolen data of nearly 40 companies from being shared

Hackers say they have leaked the personal records of 5 million Qantas customers on the dark web, after a ransom deadline set by the cybercriminals passed.

The airline is one of more than 40 firms globally caught up in the hack, reported to contain up to 1bn customer records.

The hacker collective Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters released an extortion note on a data leaks site on the dark web last week, demanding payment in return for preventing the stolen data from being shared.

The Qantas data, which was stolen from a Salesforce database in a major cyber-attack in June, included customers’ email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and frequent flyer numbers. It did not contain credit card details, financial information or passport details.

On Saturday the group marked the data as “leaked”, writing: “Don’t be the next headline, should have paid the ransom.”

It is becoming too common:

Google AI:

Watkins Steel: The company was hit by the Akira ransomware, with the group claiming to have stolen 17 gigabytes of data.

The Fullerton Hotel Sydney: Passports and driver's licenses were reportedly part of a data breach impacting the hotel in April 2025.

Hertz: The rental car company reported a breach affecting customers' personal data and driver's licenses, stemming from an attack on a vendor between October and December 2024.

MKA Accountants: This Victorian accounting firm was a victim of a Qilin ransomware attack, with internal documents posted to the dark web.

Qantas: Was affected by a data breach in May 2024.

Ticketek: A breach exposed customers' names, emails, and dates of birth.

Medibank: A high-profile breach in December 2022 exposed sensitive customer data including names, birthdates, passport numbers, medical claims data, and medical records.

Optus: Another major breach that affected a large number of customers.

Service NSW: Was also a victim of a significant data breach.
Australian Parliament House: The data of many staff members was exposed.
Canva: Experienced a breach in January 2025.

It gives pause to any more Govt. ideas of a digital ID.
The security cannot be guaranteed.

Glad they did not pay the ransom. Hope more companies follow suit.

This Digital ID business seems a bit 'fishy' to me.

I was looking into it recently and to get it you need to download an app onto your phone from Google Play or the Apple App Store - and who knows if that's been tampered with? Wouldn't be the first time.

Then, you need to provide at least 2 'physical' forms of ID. In my case it would be my WA Drivers Licence and my Medicare Card which would give me just the Standard ID. I can't get the Strong ID because I'm not an Australian Citizen.

But, I'm sure all of these government departments have most or all of this information anyway. Or they could easily obtain it.

So why do they want this Digital ID?

As I said - something doesn't seem right about this. At least Digital ID isn't compulsory. For now, anyway.

What the government will probably do (and they're quite good at it) is continue to say it isn't compulsory but they will gradually make it more and more difficult for people not to have it.

We should all be very worried.
In every case including this latest Qantas case -
hackers were able to download enormous amounts of information.
The computers/ servers should have a firewall that allows only one person's
data to be retrieved at a time – and then a time limit of say 2 minutes before
another piece of data can be retrieved -
not Gigabytes of data about millions of customers in one hit.
It's as though they all designed by imbeciles.
Can't the servers recognise that something is wrong?

That would make it rather tedious, inconvenient and time consuming to book flights.

On average, approximately 6,000 flights operate daily within Australia.

But then again -
what travel agency that wants to book a customer's flight needs
to download Gigabytes of data?

Who the hell uses a travel agent?

Do they even exist anymore?   Undecided

Take a Diazepam and settle down, Bobbi.

Your details are going to be stolen again.

And again.

Optus gets hacked, so you move to Telstra?

Pointless - Telstra will get hacked too.

Qantas gets hacked, so you move to Virgin?

Pointless - Virgin will get hacked too.

This is normal life now, Bobbi.

Your private information is going to be stolen all the time from a variety of different organisations.

Take a chill pill and just change your passwords every now and then.

There really isn't much more you can do.

And next all your Grubberment information will be stolen too
including bank account numbers.

You'd need heroin to overcome it not Diazepam.

Keith Richards said Heroin can solve any problem.

Quite a few if the local travel agent in Lismore Square is anything to go by. There's 3-4 staff there at all times and people sitting at desks doing shyte. Something they do has got to pay them.
