Italy and Spain have stepped decisively sending warships to shield the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian-led mission carrying desperately needed aid to the besieged Gaza strip. The flotilla came under attack on September 24 when multiple drones targeted its vessels in international waters, an assault that activists describe as an attempt at intimidation. Within hours, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto condemned what he called Israel’s “unacceptable” actions, saying they reveal a government that has “lost its reason and humanity.” At 3:50 a.m., Crosetto authorised the Navy’s multi-purpose frigate Fasan to leave its patrol north of Crete and head toward the flotilla for potential rescue operations.
