Hamas claims leadership survived Israeli attack in Doha, but confirms six deaths

...

The Palestinian armed group Hamas has said five of its members were killed in an Israeli air strike in Qatar's capital, but claimed that an attempt to assassinate its negotiating team "failed".

Hamas said the negotiating team was meeting to discuss the latest US proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip at a residential compound in Doha when it was badly damaged by a series of explosions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strike was "fully justified" because it targeted senior Hamas leaders who organised the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel, which triggered the Gaza war.

Qatar condemned the Israeli attack, calling it "cowardly" and a "flagrant violation of international law".

The Gulf state's interior ministry said one member of its Internal Security Force was killed and others were injured, without mentioning any Hamas casualties.

The White House said US President Donald Trump believed the incident was "unfortunate" but that eliminating Hamas was "a worthy goal".

Qatar is a key US ally in the region that is the location of a major American air base.

It has hosted the Hamas political bureau since 2012, and has served along with the US and Egypt as a mediator in indirect negotiations between the group and Israel.

Trump expressed his solidarity with Qatar, emir's office says

From CNN’s Mostafa Salem, Mohammed Tawfeeq and Kevin Liptak

US President Donald Trump expressed his solidarity with Qatar following the Israeli attack on Doha during a phone call with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, according to his office.

Trump “expressed his solidarity with the State of Qatar and his strong condemnation of the attack on its sovereignty, pointing out that diplomatic solutions are sufficient to resolve outstanding issues in the region,” according to a statement from the Amiri Diwan, the official workplace of the emir.

Trump also “stressed that the State of Qatar is a trusted strategic ally of the United States of America, calling on His Highness the Amir to continue Qatar’s mediation efforts to end the war in the Gaza Strip,” the statement said.

Trump affirmed that Qatar’s role “is a key factor in establishing peace in the region,” the statement added.

Remember: Earlier in the day, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said attacking inside Qatar “does not advance Israel or America’s goals.” In Trump’s conversation with the Qataris, the US president “assured them that such a thing will not happen again on their soil,” Leavitt said.

Trump says Israel's strike in Qatar was "not a decision made by me"

From CNN's Kevin Liptak
President Donald Trump sought to further distance himself from Israel’s attack in Qatar, posting an addendum to an earlier statement from the White House that specified the decision was made by Israel’s leader and that the US learned of it too late to intervene.

“This was a decision made by Prime Minister Netanyahu, it was not a decision made by me,” Trump wrote on Truth Social today, inserting the line into a statement read earlier from the White House briefing room by his press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Trump added that by the time his administration learned of the attack and told the Qataris, there was little he could do to stop it.

“I immediately directed Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to inform the Qataris of the impending attack, which he did, however, unfortunately, too late to stop the attack,” Trump wrote.

The president also said he directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to finalize a defense cooperation agreement with Qatar, though the two countries have an existing pact that Trump amended when he visited Qatar in May.

Wong condemns Israel's strike in Qatar

We've just received our first Australian reaction to Israel's strike overnight on Hamas leaders in Qatar.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong this morning added Australia to the list of countries that have condemned the strike, saying it "flies in the face" of any progress towards a ceasefire and the return of hostages.

"It's a strike that violates Qatar's sovereignty. It undermines, or potentially damages, the possibility of a ceasefire and the release of hostages, and obviously it risks escalation," she says.

"Let's remember what Qatar has been doing. It has been working with the United States to try and deliver a ceasefire and return of hostages. They have been tireless in those negotiations. That's the context in which this strike has occurred.

"I think it is the wrong thing to do. It flies in the face of what we all want, which is a ceasefire and the return of the hostages."

Yasser Arafat was the Palestinians leading negotiator for peace in his later years. He died in his mid seventies following a bout of influenza. The Israelis allowed him to travel to seek medical attention.

Arafat's peace negotiations failed because the people of Gaza voted for war. Fatah's popularity went from almost universal to minority status because they pursued peace under Arafat. You do not need a sinister conspiracy to explain the never ending war. It is simply what the local Muslims want.

Likewise you do not need a sinister conspiracy theory to explain why Israel repeatedly returns land after each of the many military victories they have had. They return it because they do not want it.

To see it any other day requires a hatred of Jews strong enough to blind you to the bleeding obvious.

And they have never denied it: the establishment of the Israeli state over the ancient lands of Judea, Galilee and Samaria.

As such, Zionists deny they are stealing the land... they'd argue they're reclaiming it.

Zionism is a mask you use for your hatred of Jews. Nearly everyone in the world is a zionist today, because nearly everyone in the world supports Israel's right to exist. But still, you have to make up some term other than Jew when expressing your hatred of them.

It's the only way I can think of to explain all the lies and hypocrisy.

And it is not "most of us." There are only a small number of you, once you take out the Muslims, who are compelled by their religion to hate Jews.

Leaving aside the decades-old eccentric claim that any state has a right to exist, where are the borders that nearly everyone in the world agrees constitute Israel?

Do you now know how to use google maps?

Introducing a topic with "leaving it aside" sounds like an exercise in BS Meister. Do you deny Israel's right to exist, or do you just enjoy pointless arguments?
