Oscar Piastri F1
Aug 2nd, 2025 at 1:21pm

Friday practice for Hungarian GP has Lando faster than Oscar by nearly 3/10 second in FP2.

https://www.crash.net/f1/results/1078508/1/2025-f1-hungarian-grand-prix-friday-p...

I wonder if Oscar is holding back a little so Lando can't use data overlays from logger to see where he is quicker like he did at Spa.

Leclerc on pole Oscar 2nd Lando 3rd Russell 4th in qualifying.

Aston Martin 5th and 6th biggest surprise.

Hamilton the has been back in 12th overpaid and underperforming, Ferrari should have kept Sainz.

Max 8th Red bull struggling Yuki back in 16th

Difficult track to pass it's highest downforce like Monaco without the walls start will be critical for good result.

Zandvoort GP

Oscar on pole led every lap set fastest lap and won the race.

Lando DNF engine problem smoke looked terminal.
If Lando exceeds his allocated number of engines he will get a 10 place grid penalty making it almost impossible to beat Oscar in that race.

Oscar is our 3rd best F1 driver based on wins only Alan Jones and Jack Brabham have more wins.

Still a long way to go anything could happen for Drivers championship.

It was a good race.

Bad luck for poor old Lando though.

Good to see Hadjar get his first podium finish.

Monza GP

Redbull have new low downforce rear wing which they didn't have last year.

Oscar didn't do first practice had to let rookie drive his car.

Qualifying had Max on pole Lando 2nd Oscar 3rd.

Max won by 20 seconds Lando 2nd Oscar 3rd.

I have been reading Adrian Neweys book How To Build a Car.
With Senna fatal crash he said steering column had been reduced in diameter 4mm they did not increase wall thickness which is usually done when reducing diameter.
He was not in charge of this modification
Data showed steering input pressure went to zero just before Senna left the track.

Picture shows broken steering column which is likely cause of fatal accident with Senna.

I wonder if Piastri will follow the team orders like he did at the Italian Grand Prix if the drivers' championship depends on those few points.

Good point about Oscar not getting to do practice 1.

I've noticed that Oscar does evolve over the weekend, tending to improve gradually over the 3 practice sessions, unlike some others who can be a bit quicker to acclimatise.

Tough call to hand Lando a place because of a bad pitstop. I suppose McLaren are trying to make sure both drivers have good points to ensure the constructor's title is in the bag.

Same situation in Hungarian GP last year when Lando was told to give position back to Oscar after pitstop undercut which gave Oscar the win.
McLaren need to sort this out so drivers don't have to swap places from strategy stuff up

There was no win on the line here Max were dominated race.

As for Oscars pace in practice he is either on it or looking at Landos data to improve drivers tend to go as fast as they can.
They do send the cars out with different setups in FP1+FP2 then converge with best setup in FP3 so pace difference early might be due to different setups.

Red Bull usually find time for qualifying it's well known they don't turn engine power right up in practice.
They run a safer tune to reduce stress on engine before qualifying.

As for the world drivers championship i would rather be 30 points in front than looking to gain 30 points at this stage Oscar is still looking good.

Baku qualifying tonight.

Lewis Hamilton fastest in FP2 followed by LeClerc.
Hamilton has higher downforce setup making him quicker in corners but slower on straights compared to leclerc.
The low downforce setup is needed for race or you will lose position on straights.

Oscar and Lando outside top 10 both crashed into wall.

Oscar won here last year after battle with leClerc

Oscar crashed in Qualifying started P9 Lando 7th with Max on Pole.
Sainz was the big surprise in 2nd both Ferraris outside top 10.

Race
Oscar jumped start then slowed down anti stall kicked in car bogged down he was last then crashed into wall out on the first lap.

Max won easily Lando 7th.

Max has won last 2 races if he keeps this up he could get close to winning championship if McLaren crack under pressure.

Lando Norris has picked up damage to his front wing.

Norris tagged the back of Max Verstappen, before sliding into Piastri.

Oscar Piastri is not happy with his McLaren teammate.

"Yeah I mean that wasn't very team like, but sure," Piastri complains over team radio.

He later adds: "So, are we cool with Lando just barging me out of the way or? What's the go there."

Lap 4 Russel leads from Verstappen Norris and Piastri

Oscar is still angry (and rightly so).

There's talk now of him leaving McLaren and going to Ferrari.

If they got rid of Hamilton, kept Leclerc and added Piastri it could be a good combination.

Oscar should be angry with himself for leaving the door open for Lando to stuff it up the inside.

It was a "racing incident"

McLaren lose 10% wind tunnel testing time next year for winning constructors championship with new engine and aero rules hard to say who will get it right next year.

Hamilton has a new engineer working with him this year it has taken a while for them to understand each other with car setup starting to come good so Hamilton should be matching his team mate for rest of the year.
Maybe Hamiltons Italian speaking has improved.

The driver-engineer relationship is super critical to get a car that matches your driving style and to keep up with changes to track evolution as it rubbers up.
I would say the engineer is vital for success it doesn't matter how good the driver is if car isn't right you can't win.

With Parc Ferme rules after qualifying if your car isn't sorted properly by then you're stuck with it for the race.
Both Ferraris had to lift off and coast to reduce plank wear because car was too low a fundamental error. Front brake issues show they didn't have big enough cooling ducts which comes down to trying to reduce drag as bigger ducts create more drag or it could be in clear air it was adequate but not if stuck behind someone.

Hamilton had Bono as engineer at Mercedes Max has had same engineer GP for entire F1 career.

Next year who knows which team will nail it for new design rules if past experience is considered Adrian Newey cars at Aston Martin might be the team to beat.

McLaren lost 10% wind tunnel test time for winning constructors championship last year.

No more upgrades for Mclaren this year they have to make do with what they have.

RedBull improved after floor upgrade at Monza might have some track specific upgrades planned.

Mexico this weekend higher altitude track lower air density so high downforce track without drag penalty.

2nd Practice session Mexico

Max fastest
Ferrari 2nd fastest
Mercedes 3rd fastest
Lando 4th
Oscar 12th

If Max can stay fastest with a Ferrari and Mercedes in front of McLarens then he will be looking good for Drivers championship.

Both McLarens thrown out of Las Vegas GP in huge F1 title twist

McLaren pair Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix for technical infringements.

Both the MCL39s of Norris and Piastri were found to have excessive plank wear and failed to meet the 9mm thickness requirement of the rear skid block after they finished second and fourth in Sin City.

McLaren being thrown out of the grand prix marks a huge and dramatic twist in the F1 title race, leaving Norris 24 points ahead of both Max Verstappen and Piastri going into the final two rounds of the season.

But McLaren’s double disqualification has handed the Dutchman’s seemingly faint hopes of becoming a five-time world champion an unexpected boost heading into the penultimate race of the campaign in Qatar.

There are a maximum of 58 points left up for grabs across the two remaining grands prix and final sprint race in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

McLaren’s exclusion promotes Mercedes pair George Russell and Kimi Antonelli up to second and third place respectively on the podium.

Wet qualifying probably caught McLaren out lower top speed on straight reduced downforce.
Parc Ferme rules meant they couldn't change it for race.

Fiberglass plank is 10mm must be at least 9mm after race Oscars was around 8.9mm front and rear.

They were close to DSQ in Interlagos with plank wear at COTA they raised Oscars car to be safe which they later said cost him performance

If Lando cracks under pressure at Qatar it could be a 3 way battle in final round.

Pic of one of greatest F1 drivers setup has too much grip ripping the crap out of the tyres looks good but it will be slow and harder to drive.

It's not crazy it's the rules.

Plank rule came in after Senna and Ratzenberger were killed at Imola in 1994.

Oscar has looked back to his best this weekend in Qatar and I hope he makes it a perfect weekend for him by winning the race too.

McLaren stuffed up in Qatar.

An incredible McLaren decision to not pit either driver under an early safety car has seen Max Verstappen win the Qatar Grand Prix and set up a three-way title showdown in Abu Dhabi.

Oscar Piastri finished the race second to extend his winless drought, while championship leader Lando Norris had to pass Kimi Antonelli on the final lap to save fourth.

It leaves Norris as the championship leader on 408 points, but now only 12 points ahead of Verstappen, and 16 ahead of Piastri who has slipped to third.

Abu Dhabi final round.

If Max wins with Lando 4th or worse Max becomes Champion.

If Lando finishes on Podium he is Champion.

Oscar needs to win with Lando around 6th and Max not on podium to become Champ.

These drivers have each won 7 races this year, Oscar was robbed with time penalty at Silverstone while leading which cost him a win.

Oscar didn't drive in FP1 a rookie drove his car.
All drivers have to let a rookie drive their car in FP1 twice a year.

Looks like Ferrari might be competitive here maybe Mercedes will improve as well.

A long shot for Oscar, but not impossible.

It'll be interesting to see if Oscar lets Lando pass him if it means Max doesn't win the championship.

Good luck to all of them - may the best driver win.

Extremely unlikely that Oscar will win the championship.

Lando most likely, but it would be amazing if Max could pull it off.  Shocked

Yeah, Piastri needs a lot of things to go his way.

Max won't be as nervous as Lando, and I think that'll help him win.

Whatever happens, it'll be a great race.

And it starts at a good time here in Perth (9pm), which is a bonus  Smiley

Putting aside the championship for a moment, don't discount Russell - I have a feeling he'll do very well in tonight's race.

George has done pretty well lately.

Interesting to see Yuki Tsunoda got the flick for next year and well done to Isack Hadjar who has had a fantastic first year.  Cool

George is really good do you remember when he was in Williams and crashed with Bottas in the dominant Mercedes in the wet at Spa while trying to overtake with inferior car?

Yuki is unlikely to stay in F1 unlike other Red Bull rejects like Sainz Albon and Gasly.
Hadjars promotion was inevitable a few good results in first year which is something all the champions achieved.

Helmet Marko is old school former F1 driver he lost an eye had to retire when a rock was thrown into his face while following Jack Brabham.
He doesn't want good drivers he wants to find future champions which is why they get the flick if they aren't up to it.

When Craig Lowndes went overseas to race F3000 open wheelers Marko was his team boss.
Bad news for Lowndes was Juan Pablo Montoya was his team mate who won then went on to win in Indycars did alright in F1 and Nascar.

As for this race best chance for Oscar is if Lando takes it easy into first corner being conservative to finish on podium then gets into first corner incident damaging a wing or tyre.

Well, it turned out to be a boring race.

1. Max

2. Oscar

3. Lando

Lando Norris is the new world champion.

Good on him - he was very happy.

Lando wins championship by 2 points with Max second.

McLaren asked Oscar to give his place back to Lando at Italian GP when Lando had a slow pit stop.
Max laughed about this on radio during race "Why because of a slow pitstop?".

Lando gained 3 points because the team asked Oscar to let Lando pass in Italy.
