The policy was always up for review. Australia's 'beef' was always that they had no way of determining what was coming from the US, and what was coming through the US from Mexico. Very few local Butchers breakdown bodies of beef anymore.

They buy their meat in boxed from wholesalers. Boxed t-bones, boxed rumps, boxed rib fillet, boxed blades, rounds, topsides, etc, etc, etc

even very few bodies of pork or lamb.

They buy in boxed offal as well.

We won't be importing top quality US Beef I'd bet you.

For over 40 years most of the beef exported from Australia into the US has been for their "Hamburger" trade........ old culled bulls & cows.

That has changed & now includes good grass fed beef which is liked by US consumers.

In general our beef quality is better than US - so why would we want their beef on our shelves?

It’s a political game of power by Trump.
It’s not a necessity for us in Oz, but Albo is being coerced into a corner, almost blackmail … it’s buy our beef, let us import to your country, or a tariff slapped on your country.
This has nothing you do with respecting our country as great with the best beef in the world, it’s about trump favouring his own country.
He couldn’t be happier if our beef industry falls apart… all the more to make us dependent on their exporting to us.

Trump was just dogwhistling. The fact remains that even with this, we will import very little beef. The US domestic market does not produce enough beef for it's own market, let alone any excess to export.

I guess I have been spoilt over the last few years by a local butcher who still has contacts with local producers.

I fully agree our beef quality is better than the US, which is why most of our decent beef goes there. Whilst in the US this year, I wandered around the local markets and noted our produce was much cheaper than we pay. I love BBQ lamb loin chops, but at $15 for 4 small ones at Coles, I don’t buy unless I have a “ping” for them - in the US, those same ones were a lot cheaper, even taking into account the exchange rate. We are getting screwed by our primary producers because they chase the big dollars with the premium meat whilst leaving us with the remains.

I don’t know which is better, low quality Aussie beef/lamb/pork at high prices or imported produce at (at this stage) unknown prices. I am hoping the big thing this will do is introduce competition.

Unfortunately, Australia seems to favour export of everything rather than country first, export the rest. All well and good if your exports are priced appropriately for the quality, but nothing more than a cash grab for the few if they are not.

Before the supermarkets got into the meat business, to be classified as veal, the calf had to be under 4 months of age. Woolies and Coles started selling up to 12 month old calves as veal and now the standard for veal has gone from 4 months to 12 months.

It should have been stopped in the beginning.

Yes - that's not veal at all .... it's yearling.

It tastes nothing like true veal.

I used to make a crumbed veal schnitzel with bacon & grated cheese.....

it was a regular when we could still buy real veal at the local butcher....

that would be 30 years ago or more.

The livestock producers are "price takers" not "price makers". Their livestock goes to auction. And a lot of the cost is with the middlemen, as noted above few butchers now kill, but buy boxed. So it goes through a buying agent, a commercial butcher, a reselling agent generally not their own.

I can bet you that's not "eye" fillet either - it will be rib fillet ..... they charge up to $80 a kg for Wagyu rib fillet.

I quite often buy whole real/ridgy didge eye fillet from Aldi or independent supermarket Fresh & Save.

My son in law & 2 grandsons are very fussy steak eaters ...... any fat has to be gone.
