Unending pain
Jul 14th, 2025 at 1:06pm

Arthritis is a bitch!

You aren’t sick, can look healthy yet have a silent torturer causing acute pain.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that affects joints.

Each joint, where two bones meet, has a layer of cartilage that is in between the bones. The problem is that this cartilage is very poorly supplied with blood vessels so as the cartilage wears it is not replaced or replenished. So the cartilage gets thinner as it wears and one bone, say a femur, moves further into the socket on the pelvis, it develops lipping and buttressing so the joint doesn’t work properly and inflammation and pain develop.

There is no cure tho maybe stemcells, injected into the cartilage might help it regrow. Fluid is sometimes injected into sinovial spaces between the two bones to push them apart a bit for temporary relief. Hip and knee replacements remove bone and insert titanium replacements—my right hip is made of titanium.

After my hip replacement had settled in, pelvic bone growing over the titanium socket, I thought I could go back to brewing beers.

Yeah, nah. Bloody shoulders are arthritic and I am sitting here with pain in both shoulders and upper arms. Fantastic, not!

I hope my generation is the last to suffer from osteo arthritis. Stem cells do offer hope: https://arthritisaustralia.com.au/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Draft-Art...

But the lack of blood vessels might make treatment difficult.

I described my arthritis (only in the right shoulder at the time) to a neighbor in Georgetown. He said it was funny I chose Tasmania to live. However, with a thick jumper as “pajama top” I find no pain from Tassie cold.

Heat and cold help reduce the inflammation but that is just treating the symptoms as do non-steroidal anti inflammatories, corticoids etc.

My right shoulder has a tear in the tendon as well as arthritis. Three shots of cortisone into that joint did. . .nothing (sigh.) When I had XRays and ultrasound taken last week the ultrasound showed severe arthritis so no point trying to do anything to fix the tendon.

Isn’t modern medicine grand. . .my treatment for arthritis pain? “Buy a wheat bag.” Really encouraging, NOT!

I will keep recording on the arthritis as well as any cures or real improvements on the treatment of arthritis. Stay tuned.

LOL, alternating warm and cold treatments applied over the joint do reduce inflammation.

So in the shower I set the water to pretty hot, let that run over my shoulder. Then, gritting my teeth, I turn the tap to cold.

Let me tell you, cold water in a Tassie winter is c c c cold! Cold with a capital C! So as soon as no hot water is mixed with the cold I stand there with clenched teeth, usually for no more than a second. A minute later I repeat this but not after the second time. Does reduce the inflammation. Will see about buying a wheat pack, apply it when I hit the sack.

Weird—in my reading about arthritis I found that arthritis can cause gout–like symptoms. Will try and find that and elaborate.

You poor bugger!

So far today—early I know—not much pain. At its worst the pain, tho sharp, is nothing like the pain I suffered from my arthritic right hip, the one now made of titanium. A hip is a load bearing joint, shoulders aren’t.

There is another problem with arthritic joints and I will do some reading up about it and discuss it later.

I was getting some pain in the right hip a few weeks ago, went to quack suggesting maybe the joint had worn. XRays showed the joint was fine. Still don’t know why that pain happened. It wasn’t sharp or severe but it was there and it is 13 years since it was installed and it has to be replaced after 15 years so I thought maybe it is worn a bit early—I do a lot of walking, especially since adopting Socks  Grin

Arthritis pain is tiring.

I remember explaining to someone (That might have been my GP?) that on a “good day” the pain was “just a niggle.”

Problem is, there was never a day “when I didn’t know I had a right hip” and that it was so terribly tiring.

As I type this crap, my left shoulder is starting to develop pain, the sharp pain unlike the dull sort of pain my right hip up until the hip replacement  operation.

The hip operation, will write about that. After my hip replacement operation I wrote a blog on the process, a very patient–eye view that captured the attention of nurses, physios and even surgeons. Will try and recapture the blog—it should help anybody about to undergo hip or knee replacement surgery.

Jovial Monk,

Sorry to hear that you are suffering with........

"Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that affects joints"

In this thread......

"osteo arthritis."

"When I had XRays and ultrasound taken last week the ultrasound showed severe arthritis"

"Isn’t modern medicine grand. . .my treatment for arthritis pain? “Buy a wheat bag.” Really encouraging, NOT!"

"I will keep recording on the arthritis as well as any cures or real improvements on the treatment of arthritis."

"Weird—in my reading about arthritis I found that arthritis can cause gout–like symptoms....... "

In that very last one, you got that......completely    a rse    about.

It is NOT your arthritis situation, which is causing your "gout–like symptoms".

It is the opposite way around.

I AM SURE THAT YOU [and others] WOULD NOT BELIEVE ME, BUT........

Osteoarthritis and osteoporosis are totally preventable.....and are as a result of a mineral deficiency in peoples diets.

Keep searching online.

I have given you enough clues.

I'm sure that you will discover the cause.....and thereby, realise how to apply the remedy.

A pity about all of the 'remedial' joint operations you have had to suffer through.

Yadda......old guy.

Keep searching.......and you will find the truth.
.....if you choose not to dismiss it.

Yadda, thank you for trying to help me end and prevent arthritis pain and I mean that sincerely.

BUT

you missed one critical point: the cartilage is poorly supplied with blood vessels. Consequently, diet does not make much difference, wear is not replaced.

By all means, try to contradict me, something useful may result.
