Socks, despite living here with me present except once when I needed to have the car checked for roadworthiness and the rego changed from SA to Tasmania and left her home for six hours still has some separation anxiety. If I had to put her in a boarding kennel or with friend or family for a week or more—oh boy, the whining would be horrific

First time I took her on a trip to Tasmania I put her in a kennel on the ferry then started to leave the car deck she whined so loud it effortlessly cut through the roar of noise on the car deck.
On the way back I stopped in Nhill, Victoria. We stretched our six legs on the nice wide and long median strip, both relieved ourselves, Socks on the grass me in the nice brick public toilet, then crossed the other side of the road. I tied Socks to something and went into the bakery to order food for us, sandwich and drink for me, cold sausage roll for Socks.
Well, as soon as I entered the door of the bakery Socks started screaming! No other word I can give to the sound coming out of that dog! I went back and stood in the doorway where Socks could see me, still kept on screaming.
Everybody thought it was a huge joke. Ah well, placed my order, paid for the food when it was ready and sat down at the table on the pavement and gave Socks her emergency rations and ate my lunch.
These days I make it a point of walking Socks to the post office twice a week, tying her up and, first telling her “One minute!” go into the PO to check if there was any mail for me and return to the mutt. Same with the rather useless local and tiny supermarket.
Finally got her to be relaxed and comfortable while tied up outside a commercial premises with me inside. Even then I can’t remain inside for too long.
Can’t imagine the reaction if I had to leave her with family or a friend or boarding kennel for say a week. This might happen, need a corneal transplant and maybe an artificial cochlear insert “soon” and what to do with Socks meanwhile? Her reaction when I return? Oh boy!
