My recent fun listening to 1st reactions to Dark side of the moon had me listening to them again.

did they make the best albums ever?

I think Tubular Bells makes the #1 'album' of the last century, for the UK anyway. With it being made by a 16 year old Mike Oldfield prodigy, discovered by a hungry Richard Branson who's magazine effort was going nowhere.
Tubular Bells hit #1 immediately and made Branson rich overnight with the album being the first and greatest success of Island Records.
