China is too powerful for us -
they have the largest navy in the world -
no matter how much we spend we could never defend ourselves
without help from the USA and perhaps the UK too.

Told you, Blooby.

Might be wise to start learning how to speak Chinese.

Here's a question - what alternative was there?  Please tell us what alternative was there have had sufficient range and ability to match the proposed atomic powered submarine?  Tsk, tsk, tsk... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

There you go again,Brian, nobody calls the Steam submarines ‘Atomic’ anymore, the buzz word for these conventionally powered steam boats is ‘Nuclear’.

In answer to your question, try Gotland-class submarine
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotland-class_submarine

The Gotland Class is registered to have a range of 1,700 nautical miles.  Nuclear submarines have an unlimited range.  They do not compare all that well, Eugene. Tsk, tsk, tsk... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

The range of the Stirling engined subs is limited by the amount of compressed oxygen that they can carry and that limits their range, however that is a design choice and as we have no need for unlimited range then a Sterling engined sub can do what we need and SILENTLY unlike the noisy steam boats.

Pity that Bill Shorten isn’t PM, then we could call him “Steam Boat Bill”.
