Dark Side of the Moon
Jun 4th, 2025 at 3:19pm

Here's a good discussion.

I'm looking up at the moon (still daylight) and it's half in sunshine reflecting, while the other half is not.
Is the unlit side the Dark Side of the moon?
...that is now seen by us.
Or is it ONLY that part of the moon that never faces us due to it being tidally locked?
...half of which is in sunshine upon the, dare I say, the FAR side.

Our (humanity's) reality is from our earth's perspective. So the moon is always the side facing earth. Dark side is where China's building her military moon base.

Yep, Jas... you're correct.

It's a common mistake, what should be called the dark side of the Moon is the side of the Moon facing away from the Sun at any given time during the Moon's orbit around the Earth.

The dark side is the side facing away from the Earth at full moon and it's the side facing the earth at "new moon" and everywhere else in between. All areas of the Moon are in darkness at some point in it's orbit although I believe the insides of a few craters at the poles are in perpetual darkness.

Even the iconic (though far fetched) TV series Space:1999 made that mistake right at the start of the first episode.

Space: 1999: Season 1 Episode 1 - Breakaway (Full Episode)

(Funny looking Moon in the first scene, by the way... I'm sure it doesn't have any huge shallow craters like that, even on the far side).

There is only a far side of the Moon -
the dark side is a misnomer.
When we have a new Moon the side facing us is dark.
When there is full Moon
the other side is dark - the far side.

A day on the Moon lasts about 28 of our days.

The same side of the moon always faces the earth.

The far side of the moon isn't always dark.

The phases of the moon are caused by the earths shadow on the earth facing side.

The Far side: Taking the bait.

Nonsense - that only happens during a lunar eclipse.   Embarrassed

Maybe this is why humanity is a bit stuffed?
Some see the ever hidden Far side as the Dark side, when the Far side experiences full moon light as well, while the Near side experiences darkness - which we can still see after the last slim crescent 🌘 phase is passed?

So Bobby explains it right as a misnomer?
And half the planet still calls the Far side as the Dark side?
Aka Pink Floyd? For example?

An Eclipse would indeed present us with a real Dark side experience in view of our perspective here on Earth.

They worship the cresent moon of 10% light, 90% dark.
Are they evil Siths of the Dark side?

Yes Dear Bobby - I over simplified.

A solar eclipse is when the moon is between the sun and the earth blocking the sun.

When in a lunar phase the earth is dependant on the angle of light on the moon a new moon the moon is closest to the sun and the full moon the moon is farthest from the sun (behind the earth but not blocked by it..  It's a 28 day cycle. i.e a half moon is when half the moon has sunlight shining on it at 90 degrees and half the moon is seen in sunlight.

About twice a year there is a lunar eclipse. The full moon goes into full shadow.

It was more about the far side joke.
