So have no mental health checks at all or ban gun ownership....What do you suggest???

I suggest that they make the legislation enforceable. Although that is probably not obtainable.

What would be your suggestion?

"There were 52 firearm-related homicide deaths in WA from 2010 to 2022. WAPU has been able to identify that at least 16 or 30.7 per cent were shot and killed by a licensed firearm owner. Although it should be acknowledged that this figure is heavily influenced by the Osmington incident in May 2018."

https://www.wapu.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/WAPU-Research-Paper_Firearm-t...

So 7 out of the 52 were in one incident. The 52 were shot by the 90,000 gun owners, as at 2024, although numbers have been dropping. Some were multiple murders as noted. So 52/90000=0.06%. And 36 were killed by non-gun owners. 3 times gun owner's numbers. Illegal firearms? No murder is good. But the legislation has to be shown to be effective.

My problem is that when I put something up for discussion there is always someone comes along and having no idea about it, starts abusing people.
Still it’s amusing.

What are we discussing....What is the issue here???

I would prefer the Military deeming wether a person is mentally fit to hold a firearm, than a Medical Doctor.

So doctors have nothing better to do than check mental capacity of 90,000 gun owners, on top of their current practice? Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

The Military can determine if you are a good shot and let you go crazy....A doctor can determine your mental capacity to posses a firearm....Many people are banned already because of their criminal record....As long as you have a reason and you are mentaly fit to own a firearm there is the inconvienience of visiting a doctor....Not having checks would be irresponsible....Owning a gun in Australia is a priveledge not a right....The Legislation is not going away it is being reviewed to address the concerns of certain doctors!!!

IF you can see the doctor. How long does a mental health check take? 10 mins, 20 mins, 30 minutes, more? And that's on top of their other duties. Roll Eyes

Not just the doctors.  Wink

"Western Australia Shadow Attorney-General Nick Goiran has secured a win for shooters in the fight against the state’s rushed and hateful gun laws, with his motion to refer them to the Standing Committee on Legislation for a full review and report succeeding on Wednesday night.

The Nationals also supported the motion, as did Legalise Cannabis, One Nation and the Australian Christians.

Astoundingly, the motion was also supported by the Greens and the Animal Justice Party. Both parties had concerns over the mental and physical fitness sign-off requirements of the laws and the inability of Aboriginal people to hunt on their lands

Ultimately, even the ALP voted in favour of the motion, and shooters have cheered the news of the review."

So not at the bequest of Labor. Wink

"(iii) Recommended amendments that will ensure the legislation’s workability and effectiveness; and"
ibid

That's something I have been talking about since its inception, but you were all in favour, in toto.  Wink

I guess you think a medical professional can teach you how to use a firearm responsibly and with discipline better than a military professional?
You're whacked in the head Lefty.

You'll have everyone needing a Doctor's blessing of mental fitness for everything.
Looking at America and it's Psychobabble industry, it created you mentally retarded Lefties for starters. Grin

What a load of bullshit....Doctors are not teaching firearms safety you idiot....Doctors determine if someone is mentaly fit to possess a firearm....Police determine if someone is legaly allowed to own a firearm....The Military have no role in civilian firearms licencing....Complaining lefties created the American gun crisis is beyond stupid....Dickhead!!!

Maybe the WA Government should have a look at the issue of electric scooters before worrying about legal gun owners, one man dead because of an allegedly pissed Pommie tourist and allegations that the scooters are used for pub crawls.
https://www.news.com.au/national/western-australia/city-of-perth-suspends-escoot...
Why did the WA government allow powered machines capable of dangerous speeds to be used on footpaths?
The scooters were banned in Melbourne in mid 2024 because of safety concerns.
