He also wrote when fear was a synonym for respect... as in 'learn to fear the Lord'.

In the 18th century, respect was a sentiment that peers held for each other, not subordinates towards superiors, nor superiors towards subordinates.

The 19th- to 21st-century march of democracy and egalitarianism has altered the context of the word.

This highlights the problem when imposing modern meanings on texts from older eras.

I watched Jeremy Boreing 'explain' that Jesus' reference to freedom was his call to liberal democracy, but no mention of his freedom having everything in common with Hindu and Buddhist liberation, i.e., nothing to do with 20th/21st-century liberal democracy.
