Independent MP Zoe Daniel says she's taken expert advice to request a full recount of votes in the federal election in Goldstein.

Vote counting with a full distribution of preferences concluded on Saturday left the Liberal Party's Tim Wilson in front by 260 votes.

Mr Wilson says "at some point we should respect the professional staff" at the Australian Electoral Commission.

Independent MP Zoe Daniel has called for a recount in the Melbourne seat of Goldstein after a full preference count showed the Liberal Party's Tim Wilson winning by 260 votes.

The Australian Electoral Commission finalised its federal election count in the inner-city seat on Saturday with a full distribution of preferences.

"The full distribution of preferences in Goldstein (VIC) finalised today," the AEC said via social media site X.

"The margin is 260 in favour of the Liberal Party candidate.

"A recount request is being considered and an announcement regarding that decision will be made when able."

Ms Daniel confirmed she had asked for a full recount, based on expert advice.

"In light of the very tight margin and several errors picked up in the portion of the count that was included in the distribution of preferences, leading to unusual fluctuations and large numbers of votes moving to and fro in the final stages of the count, I have taken expert advice and asked the AEC to consider whether a full recount is appropriate," she said.

"There are also several outstanding questions regarding the broader count which would be resolved by a recount.

"As always, I will respect the process and await the commission's decision."
Liberal candidate Tim Wilson, who held the seat prior to Ms Daniel's one term, said he had "continually had a majority of votes for nearly three weeks".

"It never fell below 100 which is the threshold for an automatic recount," he wrote on Saturday via X.

"The votes have now been counted at least four times and Liberal and Teal volunteers have scrutineered the count.

"Yet the former MP has argued the threshold for an automatic recount should be 140.

"We have nearly doubled that with a margin of 260.

"And now the former MP is asking for a full recount.

"At some point we should respect the professional staff at the @AusElectoralCom. I wish Zoe Daniel, her family & staff well in the next chapter. I hope she finds peace."
