Hi mothra.

Actually, that has been suggested by a few people during the past couple of years and it would be a great idea.

I guess it's another one of those things that was put in the "too hard" basket (and will probably stay there, unfortunately).

Perhaps it will wriggle about in the too hard basket so exuberantly it will be noticed.

Business wil lead this, government will follow. And from what i can tell, business is finding that it makes fiscal sense to have workers operate from home.

There are already moves throughout the first world to convert former inner-city office space into residential.

Ideal for those digital nomads who do not intend to own a home or even a car.

The only thing i can put the outrage over working from home is is petty jealousy. But that is pretty typical of the Boomers on here.

Working from home makes all the sense in the world. One of the best things that came out of lockdown.

'petty ........... jealousy'..... **rolls that around the tongue a little** .....

NOPE!  It's a simple matter that certain kinds or 'classes' of worker do NOT have entitlement to cost-saving work ways over others.

No cost to travel to work, no cost for childcare, no cost for clothing etc required .... one class of 'worker' gets it - most do not  ...NOPE .... the point is that they are required in the office in order to be instantly available in all ways to handle any issue that arises.

Now if businesses were to pay EXTRA to those who actually put in an appearance at work.... or that every single such cost was made a tax deduction but not for those who work from home ..... it might be Equal and Equitable....

As it is - it is nothing of the kind - it is a hidden pay rise and a privilege over-used - and is overdue for withdrawal.

If they don't want to return to work ......................... so be it!  they can take their chances in the Jobless Market alongside the peasants.

So you agree that all personnel should be onboard and on deck in order to deal with any incident arising?  Back to the office.

You concretors are exempt, of course - you can just work from home every damned day, right?

What is your dog in this hunt?

And something that has been imagined for decades as an ideal working state - telecommuting, as it was known.

Ironic that those who complain of rampant immigration do not support a working environment that gives women, among other things, a chance at both career advancement and child-rearing.

Also, it is already evolving from work-from-home to work-from-anywhere, with a significant percentage of late Millennials and Zoomers characterising themselves or aspiring to be digital nomads.

With Boomers, having locked down the property market and capital, leaving Zoomers with little to no hope of owning a home, they'd want to leave them nothing at all to aspire to other than life in an office box?

Laughable on all fronts - people oppose Mass Immigration - you hit the truth yourself with RAMPANT immigration .... an entirely different virus ..... which exactly working environment should be giving to women alone the chance for both career advancement and child-rearing?  One that essentially is not a job at all?  No woman can serve two masters..... get with it.

You won't get any more pussy by sucking up for it - you'll end up scorned and used by all.

You've hit on something there. Working from home cuts out middle management to a degree. Even forces reconsideration of upper management.

Sign of the times.

Something no doubt being factored in by businesses for years already.

My daughter's boyfriend works from home. Has for years now. Private company.

It's not new, it makes absolute sense in many instances.

All of which adds to unemployment and destroys general prosperity and leads to more and greater social and economic divides.  A disrupted economy which less and less employs people...

You people are astounding - you will hit the roof if anyone suggests getting rid of childcare facilities - screaming that the unemployment caused itself would be a disaster... yet when it comes to 'middle managers' and others of a 'less reputable' CLASS - you are happy to see them bite the dust... your nobility of the woman worker from home saving all costs of working is economic and social nonsense, and is part of the downward path for the global economy - of which the New West (which includes Japan and increasingly China and India) still controls the very vast majority.

Does your childcare worker work from home?  Does your surgeon?  Does your garbage collector?  Is World War III run from home? Do Androids Dream Of Electronic Sheep?

NOPE.  I'm afraid that a pay rise by reducing costs of actually working is not on the cards, and your myth of the nobility of the person working from home is just that - a myth.

Back To The Office!  You've had your holiday, reno'd the house, saved all that money you'd have spent on childcare and travel costs and so forth... maybe even gone on holiday while working taking your laptop with you.

BACK TO THE OFFICE!  You can handle anything that comes up that way and actually work face to face with others in designing ideas, policies, and actual work.  The de-humanising of workers into androids who dream of electronic work is no way a good thing.

Those who actually work say
"I get wages"
Those who just think they work say
"I'm on a salary."

(Jack Taylor) -
Green Hell, by Ken Bruen

But you all know that.

I'm pretty sure the biggest 'push' to put an end to working from home is coming from the CBD office landlords who don't want to lose too much of the obscene amount of rent they charge.

Oh, and I'm also pretty sure the CBD coffee shop owners - the 'go to' people (after the airlines) for Covid pandemic health "advice" have a lot to do with the push to end working from home as well.

And let's not forget governments who also stand to lose lots of money from people working from home not having to use public transport... and CBD car park operators... the list of greedy, selfish people goes on and on...

(Hey, Bobby... we're still "during Covid", by the way).

They don't like that because you'll never match the rates you can get with commercial rent, to that which you get with residential. Couple that with the fact that most commercial leases leave all the repairs to the tenant .. residential rent the repairs fall on the landlord. Commercial is far more lucrative

Let's look at it simply - if they are not happy to work to the rules - they are not the kind of people you want working for you.  Their departure will fall in line with the banks' push to get rid of staff... let them walk into a jobless market.

People are not paid to work from home - they are paid to be on deck and available at a moment's notice to deal with anything that comes up - no matter how minor.

Seems like you hit a soft spot there Greggy.

Looks like you triggered an angry teapot to boil out of control.  All those teapot-themed insults have been nothing but projection all along.

An embarrassing night for you indeed, Frannie.

I imagine they'd prefer it to an empty building but i didn't know that. Thanks for filling me in.

I would like to think that compromises can be found, with the assistance f government; incentives and tax breaks and stuff.

All i know is we have a lot of empty space nd a lot of homeless people. Seems ridiculous that we can't mke it work.

i agree .. but they should start with all the empty houses. And do something about Air BnB ... what started as a way to rent a spare room has now decimated rental supplies in many towns.

My SIL's mother lives in a very affluent suburb here in Adelaide. She tells me that most of the houses around her are now empty ... just sitting there. Overseas investors bought them all up.
