Greens Leader Blames Climate Crisis for Floods
May 21st, 2025 at 6:18pm

Greens leader Larissa Waters says her “heart goes out” to those impacted by the NSW floods on the Hunter and Mid North Coast.

“This is the climate crisis, and how much more can we expect people to bear?” she asked during an interview with ABC’s Afternoon Briefing.

“I am from Meanjin, Brisbane, where we get big floods like that too, and it is so devastating, it is devastating to infrastructure.”

Waters said the floods are happening because we are “burning too much coal and gas”, but said that we “don’t have to keep doing that”.

“We’ve got amazing clean energy reserves here in Australia. We know they produce more jobs than old dirty fossil fuel energy, and we know they are cheaper, so we can keep people’s power bills down and protect us from those worsening so-called natural disasters if we do that transition to clean energy.”

She should tell us when it first flooded in those areas, Then comment on building on flood plains. Does she have records? Wink

What else would you expect?

Hold the heart, honey - we nearby are working on aid for the flooded.... like True Australians of the Boomer generation - the types who fill Marine Rescue, SES, RFS, VRA and all the other unpaid work for the community ..... put your money, sweat, blood, and pain where it counts...

What difference does it make when ship 100s of millions of tons of coal
and gas to other countries that burn them?

"El Nino and La Nina are on the opposite poles of the same phenomenon:  the shift of the waters of the central tropical Pacific from warmer than normal (El Nino), to near normal (Neutral of La Nada), to below normal (La Nina).

A plot of the sea surface temperatures in this critical area (the Niño3.4 area) is shown below (actually the differences from normal).  After experiencing the cool waters this winter (La Nina), we are now in neutral territory.

The correlation of the tropical water temperature with our weather during the summer is weak in any case, but winter is a different story.

So what do the latest forecasts suggest? As shown below, although there is quite a range in predictions, the general trend is towards continued neutral conditions for the remainder of the year.

What are the implications of neutral conditions for next winter?

Increased chances of a major wind event from an approaching midlatitude low-pressure system.

Increased chance of a strong atmospheric river that produces major flooding.

Bottom line: neutral years are known for their meteorological action. "
