Yes - but our systems(sic) of appointment to such positions is flawed in every example ... only a human animal troop would choose a loser or the dumbest in the pack to lead, as so often occurs.

It's a sad thing to say, but having a 'mind' "superior" to other animals works two ways - it's a double-edged sword, and allows poor thinking to over-ride basic instinctual choices ... and who can deny that poor thinking is the current day universal currency?

Well, it does indicate that humans can be superficially beguiled by charisma in a way that animals cannot.

Although in primitive societies of, say, hunter-gatherers, this is less prevalent than in modern, particularly, first-world societies.

Animals don't select leaders, that is done by violence and strength.

Yes, they do... particularly high-order animals such as primates.

Chimp alphas are typically not the strongest and most violent... the strongest chimp can always be done in by the cooperation of two or more conspirators.

The same is true among Lion prides, with the strongest and most violent lion taken out by two or more lions, usually brothers, who share the resources.

So they become leaders with the use of violence.

The alpha (there can be only one) is selected from among the conspirators, and he remains the alpha so long as he can guarantee the status of the other conspirators.

There's little difference at that level with human behaviour, with the exception that humans have mastered replacing actual violence with symbolic violence, where, say, chimps have only a rudimentary comprehension of symbolic violence manifesting as displays of dominance.

Consoling is the work of a beta.

Grappler dished out the hard facts, as a alpha would.

The first sign that a man is not an alpha is that he makes claim to being one....

The second is that he thinks putting others down makes him a superior being...

As said - the True Alpha doesn't need to stake out the territory... it is his by natural right.... and he shares it willingly while leading the way.

Remember Dick Winters?  He lead a company of Alphas, many of whom were quite unassuming and even self-deprecating ... you saw a Beta in the first Easy commander.... he tried too hard and chose attempts at compulsion... his harsh diktats were excellent for the first phases of the rigorous selection process - but once those men had passed through that phase, the need for that lapsed and he needed to replace it with leadership with each man handled with deserved respect - not pushership.

I remain unconvinced of Dale Dye's portrayal of Bob Sink.

No, that is exactly what the alpha must do - to stake out his territory and then make the rules by which others will be permitted to share that territory and its resources...

The alpha does not willingly share territory or resources, he does so conditionally.

It's obvious that posters to this thread don't know what an alpha is, nor the primal role an alpha plays in their group/tribe/society.

They seem to conflate an alpha with an intelligent or strong personality.

While alphas do tend to be intelligent with a strong personality, many others have those traits who are not, never have been and never will be alphas... Alphas must, almost necessarily, be charismatic... and often tall with high facial symmetry.
