At the moment – we have:
solar panels,

hydro,
pumped hydro for storage,

and we also have coal and gas but unlike most modern countries
we don't have even one nuclear power station.

Maybe we could have built a whole nuclear industry ? -
enriching Uranium to make fuel rods and selling them overseas.

I think there has been a lack of vision towards nuclear energy here in Australia.
France gets 70% of their energy from nuclear.

We have more than enough history with nuclear energy, most of it bad.  Tsk, tsk, tsk... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

What history  - Lucas Heights?  - British nuke tests?

Rum Jungle, Uranium Hill, Port Pirie Uranium Enrichment Plant, Montebello Island test sites, Emu Fields test sites, Maralinga test sites, Lucas Heights, amongst others, Bobby.  We have a long history of Uranium mining and enrichment sites.  Tsk, tsk, tsk... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Australia does not currently enrich uranium. While Australia possesses significant uranium reserves, it exports the mined uranium as concentrate for enrichment and fuel production in other countries. There have been past considerations and research into enrichment capabilities in Australia, but it has not materialized due to factors like cost, skills, and non-proliferation agreements.

Australia is not a third world country and is not sliding into third world status....Nuclear energy for Australia was always a gamble and was only proposed to avoid urgent action on climate change....Australia has rejected Dutton's Nuclear fantasy and claiming Australian's are ignorant to defend the failed LNP campaign is denialism 101....Ignorance and denial delivered the worst election defeat in Australia since the second world war....What a pathetic attempt to blame everyone accept the Coalition for their self inflicted defeat!!!

Be good if some realistic program was drawn up and implemented because nuclear has a role in the carbon free energy mix.

Likewise, geothermal energy in the Cooper Basin needs an action plan—yes the energy may be deep and present some problems BUT it IS there! Maybe end the Snowy II scheme?

I agree that the coalition ran an abysmal campaign, however that does not alter the facts about nuclear power. If it was a fantasy as you claim there would not be 32 counties using it now with around 30 others in the process of developing it.  The real fantasy is believing in the 'renewables' myth, as has been proven recently in Spain and Portugal. The pity is that we in Australia are being left behind because of the very effective scare campaign run by Labor and the anti-nuclear lobby.

On a related note, I was having a beer or three over the weekend with some ex navy friends, one of whom had been a nuclear power plant operator. His opinion on the irrational fear of nuclear power was interesting to say the least. Also I did a quick check and he did not have three eyes or glow in the dark, so I will take his opinion on nuclear power over that of any politician or scaremonger.

Australia were on the verge of using nuclear power in the 80's but because we had so much coal available and the infrastructure already in place for coal it was abandoned. You will not get the high electrical usage industry into Australia due to our failing and unstable electrical systems.

Australia had no plans to use nukes in the 1980s.  Its plans were in the 1960s with a nuclear plant at Jervis Bay on the NSW South Coast.  Tsk, tsk, tsk... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

If you say so, but I was training at a power station in the mid 80's to run a nuclear power station.

It would seem that Labor, and many people on this forum, have learned nothing from the debacle that recently occurred in Spain where the entire country was plunged into darkness due to a failure in the country's power grid. Investigators have said the likely cause of this nation-wide power outage was the country's over-reliance on so-called "renewable" energy sources.

I'm not saying that we should ditch solar and wind and hydro - not at all. I agree they have a role in providing energy to homes and businesses. But they simply do not provide reliable, affordable baseload electricity generation. Labor has been pig-headed in their pursuit of renewable energy to the detriment of any and all other sources of electricity generation, with the result being skyrocketing power bills for households and businesses.

The last coal power station built in Australia was commissioned in 2009 in Western Australia. It is small (a quarter of the size of the closed Liddell power station), privately owned and it is closing in 2029. Since the year 2000, there have been 13 coal power stations closed around the country, with none of them replaced, resulting in a permanent loss of capacity of 8GW to the national power grid.

We have enough coal reserves to last us for almost 200 years. I'm not saying we should built a new one next to each lake in the country. But we do need to build at least half a dozen to add much needed capacity to an overstretched national power grid. We should also have our scientists working on nuclear fusion, which doesn't have any of the harmful radiation drawbacks of nuclear fission - currently in use in nuclear power plants around the world. It is, in fact, considered one of the cleanest methods of energy generation.

No it is concentrated not enriched.

"Enriched uranium is a type of uranium in which the percent composition of uranium-235 (written 235U) has been increased through the process of isotope separation."

If you want to talk first steps then it is the mining. Wink
