Pre 1996 licences were not very restricted and after or just before the Melbourne Olympics iaws were passed to allow target licences.
Post 1996 personal licences were cancelled just in case a holder had to defend himself and we know that in ‘’Fair Go’’ Australia the lives of potential murderers doing armed car jacking or home invasion etc., must not be endangered.
My late father always carried a personal pistol, he first got a licence in 1932, he was playing billiards with the police Sergeant in Uralla, NSW, and being a hot night he took his coat off, seeing his pistol the Sergeant asked him if he had a license, negative, “Well, come to the station in the morning and I’ll write you one out’’.

Only cowards and fools would say that a firearm must never be used for self defence.

Well, there were less such incidents in NSW and other States when civilians were allowed to carry pistols for self defence and a shotgun or rifle could be in the car with no restrictions.

I'm only 69yrs old - in my lifetime QLD civilians have not been able to carry concealable weapons i.e. pistols on their person or in their car unless licensed and going to a shooting range.

Shotguns & rifles were another matter.

I know NSW farmers/ graziers had pistols on their properties, so did some QLD property owners but didn't think they were allowed to carry them on the car other than for the reasons I stated like for QLD.

A mate and I had a nice little earner going with doing annual inspections and test firing of their pistols and the supply of fresh factory ammunition .Among our customers were banks, bank managers, accountants, solicitors, real estate agents, cafe, garage and small business owners.
Sydney Pistol Club was formed in the 1950s catering for people who had “Possess, use and carry” pistol licences.
I had both a Pistol Dealer’s Certificate and a carry licence for many years, and there is no glamour in carrying a pistol, frankly it’s a bloody nuisance.on a hot day you need to wear a coat unless you have a pocket pistol and they were a nuisance also, this was in the days of heavy all steel pistols.

There's the difference - pistols had to be licensed - those that carried them i.e Bank Managers & Payroll personnel were covered as part of their employment.

My old man had one at his rural branch in the mid 60's.
He had no training - nor did the chief clerk who was allowed to carry it when moving cash.

Banks changed that policy & removed them well before Port Arthur & the introduction of the national guns laws.

Did your father and the chief clerk seek to do any training?
Not that much training is necessary in the confines of a bank.
That the Banks decided to leave their employees defenceless was a decision based on a perception of possible liability.The.then bank of New South Wales maintained its own armoury on the roof of the Martin Place branch [Sydney] and my former Sergeant in RAEME, the late Charles Sherrin was the last Armourer employed, he used to conduct training sessions, a number of which I attended.

No, it did happen less in Australia when people were able to access a firearm when they were threatened with attack or were attacked.
In NSW a law abiding citizen who faced serious threat would be given a pistol, if he couldn’t afford to buy one and instructed by the police in its use.
Today if one is similarly threatened the police will confiscate any legally held firearms so that the potential victim cannot use a firearm in self defence, understandable because the Government does not believe in its own citizens using a firearm ror defence.

Never heard of a carjacking until recent times when the 'gangstahs' started play acting the American model.

On a lighter note - the ringworm who killed that young girl on the Central Coast was found dead in his cell. No assistance but let's say his football socks ration was doubled...

Young women should still not walk home at night alone - even if most people are not a danger - some are!! Get a lift or parents - pay attention and go get your daughters and sons. Remember young Eli run down by that lunatic woman in Crows Nest.... may she burn in hell forever ...
