now I have to hand in my butcher knives?

Some kitchen knives are very long -

they almost look like a machete.

How will they define a machete?

This is sold as a kitchen knife -
Overall Length  455mm.

The Sakimaru knife is a specialized Japanese knife, often regarded as a variation of the traditional sashimi knife. It features a long, slender, and gracefully curved blade, designed for making precise, thin cuts of fish, particularly for sashimi. The Sakimaru's elongated shape allows for drawing long, uninterrupted slices, embodying the art of Japanese culinary techniques.

If you're going to use a rolling pin or baseball bat ... don't forget to put a long sock over it. Then, when the perp tries to pull it away from you, they are left holding a sock as you whack 'em over the ear 'ol again.  Grin

That's a neat trick to sock it to em Capt Nemo  Grin

When a potential 'easy meat' victim for an assailant produces an item for defence, the easy meat factor is suddenly voided and most assailants don't like 'hard work' and usually forfeit their attack in search of easier prey.

So the scum are using machetes and knives and it's obvious that the Law is failing to protect the innocents. Banning machetes, won't help the cause, because assailants will just use something else. For me, making myself a nice 'ornamental' Cutlass (short sword for fighting in close upon ships of old) that is clipped onto a nice ornamental wood board with an engraved brass plaque reading "Who dares, wins" on it along with "First place. Cutting edge technology", can rest just behind front passenger seat for easy reach.
Of course, if a Cop finds it. I just say I was just awarded it by the women of the CWA.

I'm sure some machete, baseball bat, knife, etc wielding scumbag thinking I was easy meat for a car jacking or mugging, etc. Will find that my producing of my Cutlass will show that they will have their work cut out for them and initiate their decision to flee. It's not just about me. It's also about seeing an innocent or more, being attacked by such like machete or whatever and not being able to do something about it. As we saw in a Shopping Mall, just having a Security Licences doesn't save you from being stabbed to death.

Some want to virtue signal themselves from protecting themselves, for brownie points on the Media. Well best of luck for them.
But for many, like Grey Nomads caravanning around the country, or Homeless living in tents - such things as Mace Sprays or Tasers are common at hand deterrent and defence measures people already have been forced to take.

Nothing worse than being 'dead right' for fear of breaking the law. Especially a Law that is heavily self protected itself, for fear of armed attacks.

JaSin,
no need for a weapon.

Just hold up your Bible to the 10 Sudanese attackers armed with machetes and say -

In the name of Jesus I command you to put down your weapons.

I mostly carry my knife with me and when that black Sambo gave me an aggressive shove at Chelsea, down Melbourne way a number of years ago. I didn't pull out my knife. I just bread basketed him (winded him). If he had pulled out a knife, do you think a pocket bible would help? He may have been a Muslim, which may have aggravated him more towards feeling justified to stab me.
I'm getting on in years for dealing with such with just bare hands and techniques like in the past. I've been in many parts of the world where you would be absolutely stupid not to be armed, or be with others who are armed.
This country is not getting safer Bobby. Billion dollar 💰 submarines won't protect you on the streets of Melbourne.

Well then - have a Koran handy -
pull that and say -

In the name of Mohammad I command you to put down your weapons.

Allah Akbar.

What would you have done Bobby? If you were there in that Shopping Mall seeing that guy with the knife stabbing people like that mother and her child?
Pull out your Bible? Thoughts and prayers?
What if he came at you?

A chair is the best defence against a knife.

The 4 legs offer considerable protection.

A gun proved to be the best solution as it turned out.

Meanwhile in Sydney:
they got the thief and now they are charged with crimes

Siblings accused of turning 'vigilante' after alleged car theft leads to stabbing

By Adam Vidler
6:08pm Mar 17, 2025

A group of western Sydney brothers and sisters is accused of turning into "vigilantes", after they tracked down a ute that was allegedly stolen from the family home.
Police say the family members sparked a brawl at Green Valley in Mount Pritchard this morning, which left one of the accused ute thieves in hospital.
Footage obtained by 9News shows an alleged car-thief, fresh from casing a Mount Pritchard family home, and another balaclava-clad accomplice about to make off with a Mazda Ute.

Four days later, after 4am today, one of the men was wheeled into Liverpool Hospital.
He was allegedly intercepted in Green Valley by his alleged victims in darkness, cutting the joy-ride short.
Neighbours say they heard a street-fight, saying they people were "waving their arms, running around going crazy".
Then, police say one of the men accused of taking the ute was stabbed.

Police arrested four women – aged 19, 32, 33, and 59 – and two men, aged 26 and 21.
A family of alleged vigilantes tracked their Mazda to Taminga Road using an Apple AirTag.

Steven Tonga woke to discover his three sons and two daughters were all under arrest.
The family says it grew tired of waiting for police to do something about the case.
"I think the police didn't care. When they report the car last week, nobody's come here at all," Tonga, said.
"They're friendly kids, my community know us very well, but they're not violent kids."
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the investigation was being conducted by local police.

Three brothers and a sister have been charged with affray.

The injured man they say stole their vehicle in hospital under police guard.
He's expected to be charged
One of the accused car thieves is on the run.
