Ban on machetes to be announced in Victoria as part of crime package

By state political reporter Richard Willingham and Judd Boaz
Topic:Crime

...

In short:
A machete ban across Victoria will feature in a reform package designed to crack down on crime, the ABC understands.

The state government will make the move in response to increased community concern about violent crimes in recent months.

What's next?
The premier, attorney-general and police minister will announce the full extent of the changes on Wednesday.

The Victorian government will ban machetes across the state as part of a package of law changes aimed at stamping out serious offending, the ABC understands.

The new laws — to be announced on Wednesday morning by Premier Jacinta Allan — will target serious offending, including home invasion and carjacking.

Ms Allan and her government have been under pressure both politically and from the community to address such crimes.

Since the start of the year, multiple residents around Victoria have been allegedly assaulted with machetes during violent robberies, including a 77-year-old woman in her Kew home.

Concerns have also been raised that many people caught committing home invasions and carjackings in Victoria were already on bail.

There have been strict laws all over Australia - not just Melbourne.

Here is the smallest Swiss Army knife available these days -
it would fit nicely on your keyring – sold at Bunnings -
Blade length is 34 mm or 1.33 inches.
https://www.bunnings.com.au/victorinox-classic-sd-pocket-knife_p0493747
It is illegal to have that in Victoria – even on the keyring for your car keys.

...

A long time ago I was going through Brisbane airport and I had a similar
one – maybe even smaller – on my keyring and it was found when they X-rayed
all my pocket contents on their airport security conveyor.
They confiscated it.
Later that month I saw a TV article about Brisbane airport and they had
a large container- maybe 2 cubic meters and it was full of pocket knives
that they had confiscated from members of the public.
My point is that all knives have been illegal for a long time
to carry in public – in fact -
I believe you can't even have one
in your toolbox in the boot of your car?

The new law sounds strange:

What is the difference between a long carving knife and a machete?

So will there be a machete buy back?
Will you have to take any machete to a police station and hand it in?

Serious penalties:

https://www.9news.com.au/national/victoria-crime-crisis-pressure-jacinta-allen-m...
Quote:
It is an offence to sell one to a person under 18 and carrying one without a lawful excuse
could lead to a fine of more $23,000 or a year's jail.

But does that mean you can't have a machete in your garden shed
or use it for gardening on your own property?

This is ridiculous. Machetes are a very convenient gardening and hiking tool.

So are Swiss Army knives -
you can't have one of them either -
even a tiny one with a blade less than half the length of your little finger
with a handle so small that you can only hold it with your thumb and forefinger.

Strange. Upon visiting Parliament house with another - at the security metal detect etc. We put our 'knives' in the tray, as per procedure. The guy just said "noice" and we picked them back up on our way out. No drama.

In the 90's returning from the Himalaya at Sydney airport. I was asked about anything to declare in my luggage?
I showed him my farming big Kukri knife, with the yak hide covered wooden case. I used it for the lowlands. He thought it was awesome and I was on my way.

Then there was the satchels of NZ seaweed sprinkle for food at the airport around 2008. Honesty goes a long way, but they still tested it for a pass.

Times change I guess. When things begin to be used for the wrong reasons, laws must be made.

Twice in my life I've come close to being macheted. First, when a baby in a pram. Second at Liverpool train station by a drug fuelled Asian who thought it better to go after the fleeing security guard, than risk me snapping his neck when he pulled back for the swing. Don't worry, my anus went from 50c to 5c during that tense moment at night on the platform.

Or, severely punish the very small % of the population who use them as a weapon rather than punishing the vast majority of people who use them for their intended purpose.

But what else would you expect from a dropkick Labor politician whose never held a job.

Oh my bad, it's the protected species who use them as weapons.

I used to go to Ackland street in St Kilda  quite a lot -

it's not safe to go out anymore in Victoria.

Our streets have been taken over by machete wielding thugs.

How about cane knives? Or does the legislation cover similar articles?

Carry an Aborigine weapon. I'm sure there is a legal loophole called tradition there somewhere.
