An Aussie council has declared all-out war on a common backyard pest that’s breeding at such an alarming rate just two could spawn a staggering 90,000 offspring in just six years.
The Mackay council has sounded the alarm over the
Indian myna which has taken over backyards, suburbs, parks and nature reserves – killing off native competition.
Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said Indian myna birds had established large populations all along Australia’s eastern seaboard with a number of councils now using trapping programs to reduce the number of pest birds in their area.
According to the Australian Wildlife Society, the “
“little brown bird might look harmless, but the World Conservation Union (IUCN) takes it very seriously. They put it on the list of the 100 most invasive species in the world and describe it as an extreme threat to Australia. https://www.realestate.com.au/news/council-declares-war-against-terrifying-backy... The situation is critical in some areas because councils as usual have totally ignored their responsibilities for decades to do something about these wretched rats with wings. They've ignored the threat to our native species and only now that the problem is almost out of control, do they decide they must do something.

Indian mynas are ugly thugs. They're highly invasive - they take over native birds' nests and kick the baby birds out decimating native populations.
We had a colony of them here when I first moved in back in the late 80s. And then one day, two huge ravens moved into the tree behind my townhouse. Within a week all those mynas disappeared never to be seen again. Although I still do see some several streets away but fortunately never in my backyard.
Indian mynas are one of the worst invasive species ever known - much like their human counterparts. Ugly, filthy habits, invasive and will completely take over if something isn't done to stop their invading and breeding.
