What's the difference?

Good point...

Scoot, you owe it to all your Australian-archetype fans - fat Steve and Janine!

williamson explained it really well

skepticism is healthy
cynicism is an excuse for being lazy and seeking comfort

The Cynicism Safety Blanket.

Cynicism is a guarded response which sets yourself up against disappointment.

Its role within the system is to protect you against experiencing anything bad.

It is a pre-emptive strike against a perceived threat.

If I tell myself that ‘all women are bad’, then I’m less likely to seek a relationship with women and, as a consequence, I’m never going to feel the pain of rejection.

If I tell myself that ‘everything is poo’ or that ‘things will never get better’, then I am excused of ever having to try at anything.

It’s more comfortable to get fatalistic and call it pragmatism.

The cope is framing hope as pathetic and embarrassing and optimism as delusion.

It’s “sour grapes” at an existential level.

Maybe but it's best to be a little cynical at times.  Wink

Or a perennial, self-protective comfort blanket of a - yawn and the eyerolls.

(The cynic bypasses the constructiveness — that is, refuses to do anything about changing a situation for the better — and rushes straight to inflicting punishment, be it by insult or condemnation or that most cowardly and passive-aggressive fusion of the two, the eyeroll.)

Or, more likely, impossible not to be...

Like the verse Paul Simon added to 'The Boxer' when he got older...

'Now the years are rolling by me, they are rocking evenly,
And I am older than I once was, younger than I'll be,
That's not unusual.

No, it isn't strange, after changes upon changes
we are more or less the same,
After changes, we are more or less the same'.

I'm cynical about technology too:

Needless to say, this is not about cynicism at all.

Paul Simon was lamenting that no matter what you do, the outcome is the same.

Nothing changes destiny - the core of fatalism for the East - the core of cynicism to the Anglosphere.

the very definition of a
SELF FULFILLING PROPHESY

But, Zaki argues, it’s an own goal: believing things can only get worse all but guarantees that they will, by further eroding our social fabric and discouraging us from taking action against corruption and injustice.

Expecting the worst also harms our chances of finding happiness in the now. Studies show that cynics are more depressed, drink more alcohol, earn less money and even die younger than non-cynics.

its why

MAGA os the correct "frame" from which to operate

you will notice trump "gets" this
Together, We will make America strong again. We will make wealthy again. We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again. And yes, together, we will make America great again. Thank you. God bless you.

No - I just note that the Trump Accession has flattened our socialist judgemental worriers and their rabid views .... not being cynical about their response .... but hey .... it suddenly seems that the 'side of history' has taken a dramatic turn and should have rightly been called the 'tide of history', with blatant ebbs and flows......

11/11 today, lads and lassies .... I wonder if some ratbag homegrown group of 'palestinian suporters' = terrorist murderer supporter children (some in grown-up bodies) locked in their 'rebellion' teenage stage ..... clearly on the wrong tide of history ...... are going to try to disrupt commemorations of Armistice Day - a day of peace - by imposing their madness without reason on others ..... just like some such planned to do in Brittannia .... and who I hope are met by a solid wall of authority and punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Time for our 'leaders' to grow a set - stop licking the nuts of every ratbag who comes along.... and send them a message by sending some of them 'home' again ....... or for a holiday in tropical Gondwanamo Bay ....  Cool

Take this message to Albo and Ho Chi:-

Dave. It is just me that has been sending you those cryptic letters in the mail. I just vary my writing style so that you think that it is more than one person.

For those who don't know much about the working relationship between Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel won't know that Simon often used song lyrics to criticise Garfunkel's narcissistic tendency to double-cross Simon to advance his own career at the expense of Simon's.

The lyrics to 'Only Living Boy in New York' were about Garfunkel playing Simon along with the idea they would be starring in a movie together shot in Mexico. They were known as 'Tom and Jerry'. Garfunkel was 'Tom'... The lyric 'Hey, let your honesty shine, shine, shine now' was a blatant cynical reference to Garfunkel lying to Simon about his being included in the film deal - Garfunkel saw to it that Simon was excluded.

The lyrics of 'The Boxer' were added at their comeback in the early 80s which was difficult for Simon as Garfunkel was still as he was towards him during the 60s and 70s. Garfunkel hadn't changed - still the same self-interested prick he always was. As it turned out, Garfunkel's delusion of himself as an actor went nowhere.
