UK Court Delivers First Ever ‘Thought Crime’ Conviction in British History

Fact checked by The People's Voice Community
October 17, 2024

...

A UK court this week has issued the first ever ‘thought crime’ conviction in British criminal history after finding an army veteran guilty of ‘illegally’ praying to God in his own mind.

Adam Smith-Connor, who served in Afghanistan,
was arrested for breaching a ban on protests within a buffer zone around a clinic in Bournemouth, Dorset, in November 2022. His crime was standing in silent prayer outside the clinic for his unborn son Jacob, whom he now regrets aborting more than two decades ago.

Infowars.com reports: Reporting on the case, the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) legal advocacy group said the conviction was “the first known conviction of a ‘thoughtcrime’ in modern British history.”

It added that Smith-Connor must now pay £9,000 (€10,770)
in legal costs to the prosecution,
just for praying in his head for three minutes.

The group is examining the possibility of appealing the conviction.

During the trial at Poole Magistrates’ Court, Smith-Connor denied the offence of failing to comply with the Public Space Protection Order, but District Judge Orla Austin said that what he did was “deliberate.”

The news comes as Keir Starmer’s Labour government is considering rolling out a ban on silent prayer outside abortion clinics.

Ahead of the ruling, Lois McLatchie Miller, who is communications officer at ADF UK, described the case as “era-defining,” adding:

Either you can be tried and convicted for the beliefs you hold in your head, or you can’t.

It turns out that you can.

Hyperbole

hyperbole = = deliberate exaggeration, not meant to be taken literally.

If we need to pray, sincerely, we can, .......anyone can, anywhere.

It is called a heart prayer.

Matthew 6:5
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6  But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

.

Turn now........

Love God.

Love God's righteousness.

Be at peace.

Q.
What is God's righteousness ?

What is, its worth ?

You need to search that out.

I read the Bible.    KJV

I find that scripture always 'informs' my worldview.

To me, i count that a good thing.

Guilty.

I love God, i love His law.

I see reason for this charge.
He was outside an abortion clinic where his unborn son was aborted - 20 years ago, still.
He had been ordered to not do it again.

It's not that he was silently praying.
He can go to a park or to a city and do that.
It is that he was obsessed and not behaving anywhere near normally after 20 years.
It would have been threatening and unsettling to the business, workers and customers.

And you could be correct.

But then,       .....in a week or two after that, i may post again on OzPol,
only having being 'diverted' and distracted, by something in the RW.

Although the term “thought crime” was first used in the 1930s, it was popularised in George Orwell’s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, where “thinking in opposition to the regime is a treacherous offence”.

Prayer is not considered a crime under English law, with sittings in both Houses of Parliament beginning with Christian prayers. However there are certain circumstances, as outlined in this particular Public Space Protection Order, where it can be a punishable act.

Protection zones of 150 metres around abortion clinics have also been granted under a new safeguarding measure introduced by the Government starting from October 31. The Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists welcomed this measure, but has also specified a hope that legal guidelines will “not … permit silent prayer as an exemption” in these zones.
