Another reason why the Gulf of Mexico is especially vulnerable to hurricanes and storm surge is because of its unique U-shaped coastline, which essentially traps a storm system into a populated region, no matter which way it turns, Truchelut said.

"When a hurricane gets into the Gulf of Mexico, it's hard for it not to hit somebody," he said.

The underwater geology of the Gulf of Mexico is what makes the Gulf Coast particularly unguarded against the massive influx of seawater. The shallow waters in the Gulf, combined with the symmetry of its shallow ocean floor, are what allow the storm surge to be pushed even higher onto land, Ryan Truchelut, chief meteorologist at Weather Tiger, a consulting and risk management firm, told ABC News.

The same geography conundrum also applies on a smaller scale to Tampa Bay, which is almost shaped like a cul-de-sac and doesn't have anywhere for the water that's getting pushed around to go, Truchelut said.

From Australian experience, cyclones lose a lot of power over land. There's poo for them to smash up, and every bit of damage also detracts from the wind power.

Being a beautifully square nation, the only analogy is the Gulf of Carpentaria. East moving cyclones I think sometimes pick up power after passing North Queensland, but it's hard to tell. They're pretty lame after passing over land, and there isn't much to destroy on the West coast of the Gulf.

Cyclone Tracy (Australia's worst storm) came in from the Timor Strait. Nobody was prepared.

Not very persuasive when it comes to the course or strength of hurricanes.

These things, whether you call them cyclones, anti-cyclones, or hurricanes, are a force of nature. We should firstly have building codes (which put the monetary cost of saving lives, on people rich and poor) but I think we should also offset those costs with government subsidy. Nobody should go homeless because the cost of a storm-proof house is too high.

There is always a cost for government to pay, if lives are to be saved. And there are lateral solutions, like requiring commercial premises to provide shelter in a storm. Only a coward pleads "my money" when lives are at stake.
