US$19,000 pair of jeans

Blake Lively recently wore a $19,000 pair.
How much is too much to spend on jeans?

By Fiona Sinclair Scott, CNN

...

When actor Blake Lively wore a pair of $19,000 designer jeans to a screening of her latest movie, “It Ends with Us,” earlier this summer, the look — covered by several media outlets — attracted plenty of attention. And the price did not go unnoticed. Of course, there were the aghast social media comments, those are to be expected, but the moment also inspired a reasonable question: How much is too much to spend on jeans?

Featuring thigh-to-heel cut-outs and hibiscus-shaped embroidery, the denim pants by Italian fashion house Valentino, were styled with a simple white tank, Christian Louboutin heels, hoop earrings and Lively’s signature long tousled hair. These jeans are something of an outlier, having been designed — undoubtedly — with celebrities and the 1% in mind. They are a conversation starter; they are about fantasy, they are not for the school drop-off.

On fashion retail websites including Net-a-Porter and Ssense, the most expensive jeans listed are nowhere near as pricey, with top figures mostly in the $2,500 to $3,500 range for brands like Jean Paul Gaultier, Dolce & Gabbana and Ralph Lauren. On Valentino’s own site at the time, the next most expensive pair was priced at $2,700 (reduced from $4,500). Still, granted, a lot of money for most people.

Cheaper options are plentiful across the market — from classic $100 Levi’s to newer denim brands, such as MUD Jeans or ELV Denim, emphasizing their sustainable or circular credentials (jeans in this category tend to be priced around $200 to $500.)

I thought the $250 pair of running shoes were a bit steep in price.

Not to mention that Blake most likely paid nothing and wore the jeans as advertisement. So things go over that way. Stars don't pay for their clobber. People seeing it modeled by famous people do.

its unsurprising

if you read dan kennedys excellent marketing books, you would understand immediately that a higher price is part of the attraction

it signals to society that you are a rare person who can afford such a thing

rolexes dont keep time as well as an apple watch

and if you go to buy a rolex, they wont let you unless you can produce references saying that you are the sort of person who should have one.

its the exclusivity and scarcity  that creates  the value.

When you have an income that stretches into the millions of dollars per week, wearing an outfit that cost $10,000 is not something to consider.

The amount of money I have spent on the clothes I currently wear is about $60. T-shirt, board shorts, underwear, socks and slippers. Probably no more than $60 in total. I earn about $35,000 a year. $24,000, if you don't count welfare.

The Waitlists
It is nearly impossible to talk about buying a new Rolex watch without discussing the infamous waitlists that exist for many of the brand’s most iconic and popular models. Many of Rolex’s most famous timepieces – including all stainless-steel sports watches – are perpetually sold out at dealers around the globe, and most have multi-year waiting lists with no guarantee that you will ever receive a watch before the model gets discontinued entirely. It has been reported that waitlists for some of the brand’s top models like the stainless-steel and ceramic Daytona still exceed five years at some retail locations, even though the model has been available for several years now.

housing prices are very very interesting

most people , when they go to buy a car, have a budget
no one goes to the bank and sees what is the absolute maxiumum they can borrow and then goes to a car dealer and says i can borrow only this much. now show me your stock at my maximum price point.

consumers have , in a way done that with houses.

most people buy up to the maximum they can borrow.

and of course, vendors are happy to oblidge them by meeting them at that price point .

sure some of it is supply and demand, but some of it is just people not looking at "is this worth it'

Yes, there is a wait list, but no-one is required to provide a reference as you falsely asserted Mr Ed.

if you read dan kennedys excellent book you would understand the
buyer seller dynamic

rolex and many many successful businesses flip this dynamic and it is one of the secrets to making cash

rolex have stopped being the seller and instead are the buyer

in a consumer society, this puts the power back in the hands of rolex.

no longer desperate for a sale, they actually intimidate the customer and make the customer do the sales pitch to see if the customer is 'worthy' of their watch

and yes, they are sizing up the customer, making the customer qualify himself , all of which makes the "forbidden fruit" even more desirable

when you make the consumer "chase" you can make what you are selling insanely valuable

if we look at perhaps the richest man in the UK in 1524, Henry the 8th, anne boleyn knew how to flip the buyer seller dynamic

though fairly plain, she put an insane price on herself (divorce the queen and marry me before you get to sleep with me).
and henry was willing to demolish his kingdom because he convinced himself he wanted this "scarce resource".  He was so used to having any woman that when she demanded he qualify himself, he just had to do it.

the comsuner likewise is so used to being begged to buy something that when a marketer refuses to sell them a product, they suddenly have to have it .
if you can get the customer chasing, then you are going to make lots of cash

you, smith are unteachable and will always be a loser

aussie as well

but someone out there might put down their tik tok and go read dan kennedys book and change their life.

unlikely because most losers have incredible success barriers and will never do it

i know for sure you and aussie wont  Grin Grin Grin

Listen dumbarse,  we weren't discussing the buyer/seller dynamic. We were discussing your claim that rolex vets it's customers and only sells to those it qualifies.

But no surprise that you are trying to change the topic  Grin Grin Grin

if you read dan kennedys excellent book you would understand the
buyer seller dynamic

rolex and many many successful businesses flip this dynamic and it is one of the secrets to making cash

rolex have stopped being the seller and instead are the buyer

in a consumer society, this puts the power back in the hands of rolex.

no longer desperate for a sale, they actually intimidate the customer and make the customer do the sales pitch to see if the customer is 'worthy' of their watch

and yes, they are sizing up the customer, making the customer qualify himself , all of which makes the "forbidden fruit" even more desirable

when you make the consumer "chase" you can make what you are selling insanely valuable

if we look at perhaps the richest man in the UK in 1524, Henry the 8th, anne boleyn knew how to flip the buyer seller dynamic

though fairly plain, she put an insane price on herself (divorce the queen and marry me before you get to sleep with me).
and henry was willing to demolish his kingdom because he convinced himself he wanted this "scarce resource".

Mr Ed!

What has any of that stuff got to do with your false claim about Rolex retailers requiring references

I have mixed with very wealthy and some famous people in my days.
Most tried to hide their wealth.

They would drive around in a Mazda to go to the supermarket -
leave their luxury car in their garage -
they would wear a cheap T shirt, jeans a hat and sun glasses in summer,
they would wear an old Duffle coat over their nice clothes in winter to
go out to a restaurant.
They would wear a cheap watch.

Many wealthy people don't want to advertise it -
they want to blend in with other people and not be recognised.
It's often poor people who wear a Rolex to try and impress others.

It has nothing to do with it and he's to cowardly to admit he stuffed up.

If horseboy wants I can recommend a jeweler that sells Rolex's. Not to far from his place either. The only requirement is the money to pay for it. No vetting required. Grin Grin

Auction house expert Max Brownawell explains: 'Your average woman can't just walk into Hermes and buy one. You'd have to have a long-standing relationship with one of their sales associates. '

This exclusivity and the subsequent mystique that surrounds the Birkin and Kelly has proved to be a phenomenally successful marketing trick.

Where other designer brands have become tacky and ubiquitous, Hermes alone, it seems, has been able to control access to its handbags to the point where they are badges of wealth even for the super-rich. Naturally, they are popular with the A list.

After I've stated my intention to buy a Birkin, a male assistant wordlessly ushers me towards a leather-covered desk and asks me to sit down.

'We do not have any in the shop,' he explains. 'There will be none until next month. And I cannot tell you when the next delivery will arrive. For security reasons, we don't even know what will arrive in the delivery.'

Perhaps I could buy a Kelly bag, then? 'The Kelly is even less available,' he says sternly.

But there is a ray of hope.

Would I like to see the leather samples? He opens a book of butter-soft leather and I am allowed to flick through. I pause when I reach an electric blue leather.

Could I perhaps order a bag, then - in this? His eyebrow arches again.

'No, madam. We do not take orders.

He’d tried buying it on the website but there was no Buy button, only a link to download a brochure. Frustrated, he made an in-person trip to the Rolex store. The price tag steep, of course, but he also had to join a waitlist system to buy this new item. Annoyed, he asked the store manager how long he had to wait. “Possibly years!”

guess he didnt have any references  Grin Grin

This unusual marketing strategy won’t work for most companies but if you’re a more established brand with an element of luxury, craftsmanship and exclusivity to your products, scarcity is a powerful tool.

Did he manage to buy a Rolex?
Nope. I checked with him last week and he’s still waiting. I tried steering him towards a different brand of watch that was more available, but funnily enough he wasn’t interested. When he gets the call, I’ll let you know.

guess he would have been better off with references then cash  Grin Grin

what smith and aussie fail to "get" is that rolex would be mortified if losers like them wore a rolex.

they can front up with the cash but they wont be getting one

now if they have a reference and a CV and other rolex owners who can vouch for them they can jump the waitlist

why?

because if you are wealthy , you arent going to be so crass as to flip the watch because you dont need the cash
and you will probably be a repeat customer

and this keep ths cost of used rolexes often higher then new ones

and that makes rich people invest in them like a  piece of art

just try and go into a rolex store and tell the sales assistant, you have been saving up for 5 years to buy one  Grin Grin Grin

paradoxically, if trump or beckham or drake wanders into a rolex store , they probably give him a freebie.  he has 'qualified". he has the "references" to justify him being given the priveledge of wearing one

Wonder how much my cuckoo clock is worth?

Bought by my mother for my 12th birthday in 1969.

Still has the original mechanical mechanism (been serviced with a lot of worn parts replaced over the years).

I was told to NEVER have it converted to an electronic mechanism because it would lose much of it's value.

I still have the box it came in (and the receipt).  Cool

How much is too much to spend on jeans?
