Scientist: Humans will be extinct in 100 years
Jul 12th, 2024 at 11:48pm

The future of humanity appears headed in that direction.

"He said he believes the situation is irreversible, and it is too late ..."

AGW is accelerating and may be exacerbated by positive feedback from methane emissions from land that has lost ice and snow cover. Northern Canada, Alaska, and much of Europe are affected. Giant sinkholes have appeared in Siberia.

The rate of garbage production is not declining.

Population is increasing.

Humans will be extinct in 100 years says eminent scientist
by Lin Edwards , Phys.org

(PhysOrg.com) -- Eminent Australian scientist Professor Frank Fenner, who helped to wipe out smallpox, predicts humans will probably be extinct within 100 years, because of overpopulation, environmental destruction and climate change.

Fenner, who is emeritus professor of microbiology at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, said homo sapiens will not be able to survive the population explosion and “unbridled consumption,” and will become extinct, perhaps within a century, along with many other species. United Nations official figures from last year estimate the human population is 6.8 billion, and is predicted to pass seven billion next year.

Fenner told The Australian he tries not to express his pessimism because people are trying to do something, but keep putting it off. He said he believes the situation is irreversible, and it is too late because the effects we have had on Earth since industrialization (a period now known to scientists unofficially as the Anthropocene) rivals any effects of ice ages or comet impacts.

Fenner said that climate change is only at its beginning, but is likely to be the cause of our extinction. “We’ll undergo the same fate as the people on Easter Island,” he said. More people means fewer resources, and Fenner predicts “there will be a lot more wars over food.”

Easter Island is famous for its massive stone statues. Polynesian people settled there, in what was then a pristine tropical island, around the middle of the first millennium AD. The population grew slowly at first and then exploded. As the population grew the forests were wiped out and all the tree animals became extinct, both with devastating consequences. After about 1600 the civilization began to collapse, and had virtually disappeared by the mid-19th century. Evolutionary biologist Jared Diamond said the parallels between what happened on Easter Island and what is occurring today on the planet as a whole are “chillingly obvious.”

While many scientists are also pessimistic, others are more optimistic. Among the latter is a colleague of Professor Fenner, retired professor Stephen Boyden, who said he still hopes awareness of the problems will rise and the required revolutionary changes will be made to achieve ecological sustainability. “While there's a glimmer of hope, it's worth working to solve the problem. We have the scientific knowledge to do it but we don't have the political will,” Boyden said. ...

What you fail to understand is that humanity is what is dying - and thus humanity will be extinct... not humans.   You see a lot of that right now with the psychopathic dismemberment of this country by those running the show and those who are handed, without reason, the inside running.

Humanity is dying - there is only hatred and a reversion here to the ancient law of the jungle (neo)feudal style of 'the biggest fists and the biggest dollars rule over all' ..... might makes right.

We have 'governments' that will kow-tow to some ancient and worn-out imperialist way - as long as it is from selected groups - of simply saying - "I see this land, it is my land because I see it and I have the spears to hold it."... a form of land grab workable at a time when there were very - very - few other people around and large holdings were up for grabs just by wandering over them ad maybe knocking a dozen or so 'competitors' on the head.  It is now 2024 - times and number has changed massively, and the land you thought was all yours by right of walking on it it cannot sustain that kind of possession, and nor does it abide by the rules.

They don't have the spears these days and even if they did they could not prevail using them - so the same government, sworn to uphold all rights for all equally - hands to them sheaves of 'legal' and dollar spears, lawfare backed by silver bullets, with which to threaten, intimidate and subjugate others, and thus take armed possession of land that they cannot even use.  Government itself has allied itself to these perpetrators of division and subjugation... kow-towed to their ancient way of imposing on others by force.... and joined them willingly so as to allow government to achieve its own end - a different form of subjugation of the people.

This is madness..... a form of psychopathy .... our governments are all gone to madness....... the people have no power to change things...... but history tells us that those with no voice will find it.... and the people of Australia must find their voice and enforce it on government .... of this nation will perish.

Lawfare and silver bullets will destroy humanity.... and quite a few humans along the way.....

From 60,00 years ago the world was dominated by the first nation. Land rights then were global and included the uranium, oil and burnt bushlands. When the British Empire was struggling, the spears were thrown at the dying beast.

You have been googling environmental destruction and climate change, Throbbo, and found this article from 2010 about Professor Frank Fenner's views.

Professor Fenner died in 2010.

The world could end at any moment.
The Yanks and the Russians have 12,000 operational nuclear weapons between them.
There used to be over 70,000 at the height of the cold war.

Just one nuke submarine could wipe out Europe or the USA.
It's madness and such weapon systems should never have been allowed to exist.
Reasonable people on both sides should have prevailed to stop it.
Either side should have seen that it's totally unacceptable.
It's like a loaded gun held to the head of every person on this planet.

"Humans will be extinct in 100 years"

And after that the planet will 'breathe a sigh of relief' and begin the long process of repairing the massive damage we've caused over the past few centuries.

"Mother Nature" has been trying to warn us to 'mend our ways' for quite some time now but we've haven't listened. Too much greed, selfishness and endless pursuit of the almighty dollar.

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic is just the latest in a series of 'warnings' over the past few decades but we still haven't listened and taken action.

Now we're going to have to learn 'the hard way'. Stay tuned.

Professor Frank Fenner might well be a brilliant scientist and virologist. However, he does know very little in regards to futurology. People are not just going to let things like climate change ruin their lives. They will take action to change.

Fenner has a real Mathusianistic belief system. Or perhaps he was trying to ensure more funding for his scientific comrades, with this scare campaign. In any case, Fenner died nearly 14 years ago, which makes arguing with his opinion rather redundant.

There should be more focus on things like political demography and cliodynamics. That would help people understand why the haves and the have-nots are how they are now. Research "Jevons paradox", too.

I worked for nearly 12 months with Frank Fenner.  He was a gentleman and a knowledgeable person.  He was very knowledgeable about virology and a smart man.  We used to argue about email and the internet.  He was very smart.  He had developed the first Army efforts against the spread of Malaria in New Guinea during WWII.  He heartily recommended the use of simple measures, such as mosquito nets and atabrine and what was interesting was that they worked.

Not a worry, Brian. But, my argument was that Fenner would have known sweet f.a. about what 86 years from now was going to be like. Humans will be around for thousands of years from now.

humans as we know them now will probably be extinct fairly soon.

what is a human?

1  animal drives  (sex, food thirst keeping warm)
2  the ego  ( do you like my haircut, does my bum look big, look at my new car)
3  obeying the culture (put on your mask, sit in rows at school, become a good little worker bee in the system)

how many humans have any degree of personal autonomy or direction?
how many are creative?

hardly any (maybe musk and qntin tarintino)

most spend the entire day derping

and with the AI now able to do all the creativity, what use really are humans ?
when very very shortly you will have the equivalent of a smart phone chip physically implanted in your body (and young children are raised on the things so its a small step), why would the intelligence need this useless "meat suit" at all.

why wouldnt the AI just get rid of it.

i would go so far as to say most australians are not australians

they really arent even human

they are cattle who reside in australia , but they have no australian values, they have no human values, they dont wish to contribute anything

they want to do as little as possible
they want to numb the pain of existence with drugs alcohol food netflix and porn

they most certainly do not ever want to improve

you try and show them a self help book and they get out the pitchforks

most australians are white knight

they are broke but ask them if they have ever read any books by dan kennedy or gary v or ekhardt tolle.

they will look at you like you are insane

they are broke because they have the mindset of one of my cows

feed me
keep me safe
you tell me what to do
dont scare me
dont ever challenge me
i just love my mediocrity
why would i do anything hard unless you made me
i am a taker
my life only has value to those who control me
and if you do anything i dont like i am going to moo like a victim

they locked up the entire population of victoria for a year  Grin Grin
and the guy in charge was no master of control

he was a derper himself  Grin Grin Grin

zero desire to get out of the derp state

what possible reason is there to keep the derpers around now we have AI and robotics

they are the horse and buggy of the last century

apart from a few rare men, better they were gone

and think about this

if you are on this forum, you (and most of you live in extreme derping) are STILL in the elite levels of human achievement

let that land

most of the people around you , who you see at the mall would NEVER  have anough energy to post on a forum like this

they are much happoer eating maccas, walking around with glazed over eyes and being cattle

If theres no hope for white knight, there is far less hope for them

At least he has the energy to think about these things (cut and paste) , even though he is 100 % wrong on nearly every topic

I barely had enough energy (and patience) to read your word salad (which would have to be the biggest load of rubbish I've read here in a long time).

carl

at least you are engaging in debate

most people  your age  are so much like cattle , that they get up.
think about food
derp out on netflix or the soapies
complain about their aches and pains
watch the news and see a few murders and fires and car accidents and dwell on the unsafe world (they never venture into)
have a beer and a panadine  forte to numb the pain of their existence
if they do talk its just to gossip and whinge
and take a mogadon to sleep

now, of what benefit are they to the planet?
how are they different from a cow ?
and why would an intelligent AI see any reason for continuing their existence ?
