It will be problematic, if it happens. 90% + of the delegates to the Dem National Convention have pledged their vote to Biden. They are not bound to anyone else the party puts up as replacement. There is no clear and obvious alternative to Biden in the Party. So disunity would be on display if they start haggling over their candidate 4 months before the election.

Having a cackling, diversity hire VP is coming back to bite now.

The point is that the vote of those delegates is not automatically transferred to anyone else.
