Why would Albanese ring Assange, and more stupidly, make it public that he did?

For the huge political capital it would earn him.

Why else?

Ironic that, while Yankists rant about freedom as if they invented the idea, now, through the Assange fiasco, their governance system is lumbered with having jeopardised press freedom and smearing the presumed sanctity and protections of their Constitution's 1st Amendment.

In this, Yankists acted no differently than China's CCP with its security laws.

Its the same everywhere.   In Australia, we jailed David McBride for exposing war crimes in Afghanistan.  And Witness K was convicted for exposing spying against the East Timor, in order to gain financial advantage for private companies like Woodside.

There's a difference between leakers and publishers.

The former deputy PM cautiously welcomed developments that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will plead guilty to a felony charge in a deal with the US justice department that will allow him to walk free. Joyce was part of the delegation to lobby US law makers over Julian Assange.

"A poll from earlier this month indicated a large majority of Australians - 71% - said the US and UK should be pressured to close Assange's case."

And:

Majority support for Assange’s release and return home

I doubt that.

The Assange fiasco became a David and Goliath saga years ago...

And everyone cheers a David.

What did that Poll say about how many ALP voters might not vote ALP because of this obvious political interference in the justice system of another Country?  Me included.

The ALP might bleed just enough former support from people like me to lose the next election.

Separation of Powers, my arse.

The Australian media released footage of the Australian soldier killing Afghan insurgent. The Australian media were not called into question as committing espionage. Imagine the Afghanistan Taliban getting hold of the footage of this murder. It would be actual propaganda for the Taliban to use against Western forces.

No tears for Goliath.

Notwithstanding, the US DoJ independently concluded that a political solution was the only way out once DoJ agents became convinced that the Australian political landscape had changed dramatically in favour of Assange's release.

As the US pivots towards the Asia-Pacific, it seems maintaining goodwill with Australia and Australians beat out the DoJ's (and the Pentagon's) obsession with Assange.

For their part, successive Whitehouse administrations wanted this ended years ago.

And is that the way they make their decisions....on political grounds?

Depends on the stakes, I guess.

Why else do you think Bradley/Chelsea Manning's sentence was commuted?

Oh really??!!

Judging state/national mood and political will is 90% of a politician's job.
