Assange committed no crime.

Assange is not a US citizen.

No crime was committed in the USA.

The USA has no jurisdiction over Assange other than that which the UK and Sweden were coerced to impose on Assange.

What a cockhead he is then, ey?  Pleaded guilty to a US crime.  Oh dear......

Dunno what restrictions the Government can bung on him...he will be a free man having done his time.

Given he has now admitted to espionage, let's see if he's now considered a terrorist by the Australian government.

He was forced to admit espionage, to assuage the guilt of those exposed  for conducting US war crimes, and to have any chance of ever returning home.

He freely admitted to what he did - receiving and publishing classified US military information.

He admitted that in doing so he violated the US Espionage Act.

But he doesn't admit  he is a criminal who committed a moral wrong. The US war-mongers  he exposed who carried out war crimes are the criminals.

Interestingly,  as Andrew Wilkie correctly pointed out, the US has behaved like an authoritarian state, in this case.

Quote:
Are all men (read: persons) created equal, or just US citizens?

Another story: the people living in tents in US cities weren't created equal with Elon Musk.

He admitted that in doing so he violated the US Espionage Act.

His argument has always been that his right to free speech under the US Constitution's 1st Amendment protects him from prosecution under the Espionage Act, as it would for US citizens.

The US DoJ asserts that the 1st Amendment does not apply to non-US citizens - this is the core of the own goal that the US has kicked and will likely be the catalyst for a long debate about press freedom and the Constitution in the US.

Are all men (read: persons) created equal, or just US citizens?

Ha! But you forget (likely did not know) that the US assured the UK High Court that Assange would be afforded a 1st Amendment defence just as much as it applied to a US Citizen.

They sure promised a lot in an attempt for the Pentagon to get its way - have Assange on US mainland soil.

The US Feds could not have the 1st Amendment apply to Assange as the focus would be on journalism itself and its protection under the Amendment.

Anyway, had he landed in the US mainland if the UK had given him up, charges against Assange would have sprung up like mushrooms.

Yes, it did.

And its staunchest allies stood with Assange on this.

Corruption in the Swedish and UK political and judicial systems was the cause of Assange's problems.

He could not be tried until he returned to the USA so UK politicians and judges obliged Uncle Sam with the unlawful detention of Assange on trumped up charges.

The USA does not have lawful jurisdiction over foreigners acting outside the USA so it applies unlawful jurisdiction by kidnapping and unlawful transport of victims into US territory.

That is why the USA uses secret military courts because the action of detention of foreigners and kidnapping would not be acceptable to the US judicial system.

Assange expects warm welcome in cold Canberra

Katy Watson

Reporting from Canberra

As we wait for the plane to land, the cameras are being set up and reporters have started to gather on the grass by the military base where Julian Assange is expected to arrive.

It’s a cold winter’s night in Canberra – the media keeping warm with gloves and bobble hats, keen to witness the arrival of Assange and the end of 14-year legal battle that saw a final epic dash across the world via a small Pacific island.

Julian Assange’s wife Stella and his father John are being driven by the government to meet him.

From there, they will return to their hotel – it’s not clear whether he will speak but the prime minister and Wikileaks are both planning press conferences.

He has not landed. His plane was 800m altitude off landing, but then aborted.

Ironic that Fidel Castro felt safer flying to the US to speak at the UN than Assange did at the thought of landing on US mainland soil.

He's landed and if you followed his jet on radar feed, no plane came within at least 200Ks of its flight path.

Good.  No kissing the ground.  No pollies.  Yet.  Still...the defiant raised fist.  Convicted felon.  Ch 7 making all sorts of wank offerings.

They MUST have secured media rights.  It is pathetic.

If I ever get bunged into a high security prison in the UK, I hope I go to the place he was.  He has a great big gut, walks without any issue, and appears to have suffered SFA.
