I will tip at a seafood restaurant if I ask the waiter to recommend me the best fish
and it turns out to be wonderful.
Too many places will serve you 4 and 5 day old fish for a high price
so a place that doesn't deserves a reward.

Do they serve it with Dijon and cucumber?

La moutarde aux fines herbs de Dijon.

Yeah nah.

I pay for the service in the price of the meal & drinks.

The drinks are always much dearer than in any pub.

They can't get the bulk discounts pub's can. Where they might sell,  in a busy restaurant  a couple hundred beers a day,  a pub in the same place will sell thousands of beers

$24/hr is not measly. Plus, they get a generous travel reimbursement.

$24/hr is close to slave labour.

You are kidding. It is an easy job. The only danger is on the road, or going to a house.

And the petrol, rego, insurance,  tyres,  and general wear and tear on the car?

I had 3 cars on rotation so that if one broke down,  I could keep working while the first was being repaired.

I was driving a 2-cylinder car that had a 20 litre petrol tank. $80c/L at the bowser at the time. I could do 50 deliveries in a week and only use $10 worth of petrol. But, I would be reimbursed $1 per delivery. That is $40 profit that goes towards those tyres, rego, insurance, and servicing. Plus, I would earn a measly $7.30/hr (about $15/hr in today's money).

$24/hr for an over 21 year old delivery driver. Plus, 44c/km travel reimbursement.

Then you were paid better than me. I already said I'd get $50 - $80 a night, 6 till 3am most days,  6pm  to 6am fri and sat. No travel money,  no petrol allowance.  I even went in early for a 3 week period while he went on a family holiday,  including going in on my days off to set up the other staff and he didn't give me a single extra cent.  I did it because I was planning on buying the place anyway,  which he'd already promised me, only to come in about a month later to find out he sold it to some Chinese guy who wanted to put a Chinese restaurant there.
I quit that same day.

$7.30/hr for 9 hours is $65.70 in the year 1997. If I went and worked for my friend at Dominos today, I would be paid $216 for the same hours. That is not taking into account the pay rate goes up after 9 or 10 at night. Plus, there is a higher pay rate for Saturday. And an even higher rate for Sunday.

Job?

For $24/hr you could barely get me to say hello, let alone do a job.

That's slave labour.

You work in a more valuable industry than fast food. I am the type of person that sees something like $30/hr as good money. Whereas, $24/hr is fair. And "fair" in terms of the job being easy to do.

Domino’s Sunday and eftpos surcharge signs spark heated debate
Two signs in a Domino’s store have sparked a heated online debate about a dreaded fee no one wants to pay in Australia.

News.com.au
June 18, 2024

Domino’s customers have vented their frustration online after signs were spotted in one of the pizza chain’s stores informing patrons they would be hit by a 10 per cent Sunday surcharge and a 1.4 per cent eftpos fee.

A photograph of the signs was posted on Reddit on Saturday, sparking a heated online debate about surcharge fees in Australia.

A Sunday surcharge and eftpos surcharge in a Domino's store has sparked outrage.

The first sign informed customers that on Sundays the store would apply “up to a 10 per cent surcharge on all orders, to allow for penalty rates for our team members”, while the second sign said a 1.4 per cent surcharge would apply to all eftpos transactions processed in store.

“Note this does not apply to orders prepaid online,” the sign also stated.

Both signs thanked patrons for their support and said their feedback was welcomed.

One commentator on Reddit criticised the pizza chain, telling it to “either raise your prices to accommodate the cost or take the hit”.

The signs led to an online debate about surcharges.

“Can we just hurry up and outlaw surcharges like other countries have,” the commentator said.

Another called it “bulls**t” but said “at least they acknowledge it with a clear sign”.

“You realise this is standard in most cafes and fast food now right?” they wrote.

“Blame the government and their banks not the business,” another wrote.

It turned out that the Sunday surcharge was nothing new, with a Domino’s spokesperson confirming to NewsWire that the surcharge was introduced eight years ago, in 2016.

The spokeperson said the majority of its more than 750 stores were independently owned and operated by local community members.

“As many know, running a small business involves numerous expenses, including delivering high-quality products, convenient services and, crucially, fair compensation for dedicated team members,” the spokesperson said.

“At Domino’s, our team members aren’t just the backbone of our operations, they are the secret sauce, and on Sundays they receive wages that are up to 50 per cent higher than on weekdays.

“As a result, in 2016 we introduced a small Sunday surcharge to allow for these higher wages, which are amongst the highest in our industry, while keeping our prices lower on other days.”

While the Sunday surcharge applies nationwide, the eftpos surcharge is only in place in some stores at the discretion of the franchise partner.

“Some franchise partners may apply a small eftpos surcharge to offset the costs charged by banks and card providers,” the spokesperson said.

“This is managed at a store level and will always be clearly communicated, with alternative payment options like cash or ordering online readily available.

“We know that every dollar counts for our customers and are committed to delivering unbeatable value and service with every Domino’s experience.”

The very idea of pizza, or any cooked dish, delivered in a sweaty plastic "bain-marie" on the back of a moped is hideous. Then it's eaten out a soggy cardboard box in front of the tv - revolting.
