Thousands of Aussies have shivered through the coldest morning of the year so far
as a polar air mass which brought freezing winds to the east coast continues to linger.

Thousands of Aussies have shivered through the coldest mornings recorded so far this year as a chilly polar air mass continues to hover above the east coast.

The weather system which sent temperatures plunging across the east has now moved to the NSW Tablelands and the Mackay and North Queensland areas.

Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe said many suburbs of Sydney woke Monday morning to temperatures between 7C and 9C in the city.

Overnight, Canberra reached -3C and Hobart recorded only 4C.

Liawenee in Tasmania was the coldest minimum overnight, at -5C in heart of the isle.


Clear and windless skies at Guyra on the Northern Tablelands of NSW created a hoar frost Sunday morning, with the chilly conditions forecast to hang around into Monday.

Orange in NSW was barely one degree warmer overnight than Dubbo, which reached 0°C.

Mr Sharpe said many parts of Queensland had woken up to their coldest morning of 2024, with Mackay recording 9C and just 13C being recorded in Townsville, in the state’s north.

He said parts of the NSW Central Coast should experience showers throughout Monday.

The cold front has cleared to the east with a southerly airstream expected across Victoria during Monday and Tuesday as a high south of the Bight moves slowly east, the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts.

It does not get too cold in Rockhampton during the winter. Last year, it was one of the mildest winters we have had in a while. The coldest it got was down to 4°C. Last night, it again got to 9°C.

"Edge of the tropics"? The tropics are really determined by how much rain we get in the summer. If it is a wet season, we are inside the tropics. Dry summer, we are outside of the tropics. Rockhampton happens to be on the west side of the Berserker Ranges, which mildly shelters the town of tropical moisture. But, it is east of the Great Dividing Range. So, the town is sheltered of the dry, cold winds of winter coming in from the southwest.

Mowed the lawn this afternoon. 4:30 pm I had the mower going around an afternoon sun that felt like a cool dry evening was approaching. Went upstairs to rehydrate and cool off under the fan. I got up to have a shower. 10 minutes later, it was near dark outside and the cool was apparent, even with my fresh shirt, long pants and thick socks I was wearing.

We can go from a 25°C 2 pm temp to a 9°C 2 am temperature and we have to adjust. Other places well south of the Tropic of Capricorn tend to have cool days and cold mornings.

Three years ago, we had to leave our Toowoomba motel at 7 in the morning. It was 2°C outside as we had breakfast. I had my black tea in my thermos ready to drink during the 8 hour trip back to Rockhampton. The temperature rose sharply by 11 am, when we were half way on the journey. It fell a little as we went through Mount Morgan. Then the temperature was something like 26°C when we were driving through town here at just after 2pm that day.

It was cold in Toowoomba during the day and night, being that the city is at least 600 metres above sea level. But, I am accustomed to warm days and cool nights in Rockhampton. Temperature differentials are common.

I had two heaters going, a few citronella tea lights burning in my toilet room, the doors and windows shut as much as possible. And it only got down to 13°C. I had to turn off the heaters, as it was getting a little warm by 4am.

Born bred Cane Toad, lived all my life here in Qld.

Was down in Canberra when it was as Bobby described recently.  Absolutely loved it.

I have never seen Autumn colours live before.  Just amazing how the trees change their foliage/appearance in the space of a mere few days.

I confess we had the comfort of an air conditioned home with floor heating etc, a very mansion type joint, so I have to concede it might be a tad different in less salubrious accommodations.

The Nicholls/Gungahlin area is very visitor friendly, we enjoyed the Casey Jones Hotel, the Spicy Affair and the Cafe on a corner in Nicholls.  Best curry we have ever had at Spicy Affair.  Best haircut/beard cut I have ever had at Casey Market Town.  A young, (I think) Vietnamese bloke.  Fantastic!  Go there if you are in Canberra.  He did a great job, even using sign language!

That Tudor Hotel, the George Harcourt Inn in Nicholls on a cold night, lovely.

I'll take that over a stinking hot humid Qld Summer any time.

Mind you, watching netball in a 30 knot breeze at Calwell (the other side of the Canberra universe from where we were (yes, my Brother's home) with a chill factor below 0 was a tad challenging a Saturday or so ago but.....I'll take it.  I am a sport nut, especially when there are Family playing.

I think it will get to 5°C this coming morning, given that the weather charts are showing southerly winds coming right up from Tasmania. And Thursday might get very cold. In 3 weeks, I would say that it will be freezing weather in 3 weeks time, unless we get a rain event.

Bobby, my parents' dogs have their jackets put on them before they go out onto the landing where the beds are located. The veranda is shielded by coverings. The dogs also have tents to sleep under so that the cold weather is not that bad.

I would assume that Monk would do similar with Socks.

Assume that he took your advice, without the added eye roll of contempt.

I was so tired that I went to bed not long after the last post. I lay in bed for a while with my eyes still open. Wondering why I had not fallen asleep, I suddenly realised that I still had not put the recycling bin (complete with my scotch bottles) out on the curbside for the recycling truck. I got dressed and went outside to take the bins out. 6°C at 6am.

In less than 2 weeks, the days are going to start getting longer. But it will be the dead of winter for the next month.

3°C this morning at 5 am. I was in bed at the time that happened. I had a heater in my tv room. And a heater near the bathroom. Tea lights were burning in the toilet room. The oven was on for an hour. And my citronella lantern was burning away under the house. Nice and warm. But, putting the bins out was quite chilly.

I went out for a walk at 1 am. I did my usual rest at a bus stop. Then I was approached by police for an identity check. The police officer doing the interview asked me if he could take my picture using his QLite. Luckily, he did not ask me to take off my beany for the photo, because I noted how cold it was outside the sheltered bus stop. And I was so glad that I had accidentally shut off the police radio I had previously been listening to before the police vehicle stopped nearby.

The Frankston area?

Well, if you live in the Frankston area, it definitely was as cold there as it was in Rockhampton.

Frankston beach is getting a bit of a gust of wind. So, even if the temperatures are not too low tonight, the wind factor really chills the area.

When I went on my walk through North Rockhampton, the wind factor was irrelevant. I only feel the cold if there is a constant breeze coming from the south.

However, the high looks likely to peak again near 1,044hPa early Saturday, providing another opportunity for a record before the system weakens from Sunday.

The abnormal pressure is having a significant impact on the nation's weather, including extreme low overnight temperatures over south-east states and a lengthy stretch of showery days along the eastern seaboard.
