Quote: Then why negotiate?
Because that's what internation law requires, to avoid war.
see Article 51 of UN charter.
Article 51
Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security. The UNSC has STILL NOT taken the necessary steps; ie including the recognition of both states in 1947, after the UN vote supporting the Palestine Partition plan was conducted.
But more fundamentaly, Article 51 reveals a contradiction based on confusion over sovereignty: you can't have rule of law AND individual sovereignty.
Which means in the case of member states of the UN, they don't NEED a "right" to "defend" themselves, they need the UNSC to be able to do its job ie maintain the peace. So why can't the UNSC do its job? (see below).
Quote:If Russia has rights, why negotiate?
Russia doesn't have inherent rights to attack another state; it's the job of the UNSC to maintain the peace, after the ICJ has ruled on measures to prevent the current civil war in Ukraine - a conflict giving Putin an excuse to invade E. Ukraine and Crimea.
Quote: 'Dear Mr Zelensky, I really really want Donetsk. Please may I have it?'
'Dearest Vladimir, Get lost you gangster'.
Putin wants Donetsk because Zelensky is introducing policies which discrimate against the majority Russians living there - which is like waving a red flag in front of Putin.
Quote:Russia actually conquered Berlin so we'll take the lot thanks'.

Wrong, as already noted: Berlin was divided between the "free world" and the USSR immediately after the cessation of hostilities in WW2.
Quote:Are you with Russia on this, or not? Speak up.
NO.
I've already answered FD on this; all you "individual sovereignty" ideologues - who demand the UNSC has its veto powers - are hopeless, incapable of rational argument.
Hint: if Russia didn't have a UNSC veto, it couldn't have invaded Ukraine and remain in the Council, indeed it would have faced the full force of the rest of the world, and Putin's army would have been annihilated before it corssed over the border.
