Ukraine war update
May 19th, 2024 at 11:26am

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60506682

Looks like the front line has not moved much in 18 months - see attachment.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Russo-Ukrainian_War

About 100,000 to 200,000 Russian killed, up to 350,000 wounded.

Ukraine: 35,000 to 75,000 killed, up to 120,000 wounded.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Ukrainian_War

According to a declassified US intelligence assessment, as of December 2023, Russia had lost 315,000 of the 360,000 troops that made up Russia's pre-invasion ground force, and 2,200 of the 3,500 tanks.

Between December 2023 and May 2024, Russia was assessed to have increased its drone and missile attacks, firing harder-to-hit weapons, such as ballistic missiles.[281] By the same measure, Ukraine forces were seen to be low on ammunition, particularly the Patriot systems that have been "its best defense against such attacks".

But Russians outnumber Ukrainians on the battlefield almost three to one, and Russia has a larger population from which to replenish its ranks.

It's a grind alright.
Russia's mass-production numbers show a severe lack of quality which luckily for Ukraine's less amount, gives them something to go on.
Russia has always relied on 'mass production' and sometimes it just doesn't work.

those causality figures are bullsh_t. if i go to the wikipedia article i'm almost guaranteed to find some source that eventually originated with the ukrainian ministry of defense. the real russian figures are much more likely accurately represented here:

https://en.zona.media/article/2022/05/20/casualties_eng

don't know what ukrainian casualties are as they are so secretive about them, but probably 1.5-2x. russian

Yes, but I do like Trump's disdain for war (if I understand his position correctly).

Unlike the commedian Zelensky.

Trump is OK with a dictator defeating NATO. His disdain is for US law, constitution and ideals.

Are you suggesting Zelensky enjoys having the Russians invade?

The US has spent about $175 billion supporting Ukraine since February 2022. Far more than they spend supporting Israel.

What makes you think the Russian figures are more reliable, or that the Ukrainian ministry of defence is the source for all the other estimates?

They all want the soil:

Nearly a quarter of the world's most fertile soil, known as Chernozem,
is located in Ukraine and it averages about 1.5 meters deep.
It is also why Hitler's army got bogged down in Spring from mud
and the same happened to the Russians in the last 2 years.
It's just drying out now so expect a large Russian offensive any day now.

Happy chappy Putin likes horse-riding and big tables. War is his last resort (well he has several resorts but no artillery to speak of).

What makes you think the Russian figures are more reliable, or that the Ukrainian ministry of defence is the source for all the other estimates?

i didn't cite russian figures, because i don't treat official ministry of defense statements on eitherside as reliable (and nor should you). i cited mediazona which is a BBC affiliated organisation. and it has a clear methodology for determining russian casualties based on actual empirical evidence (looking at obituaries, social media posts of soldiers families, funeral schedules, graveyards, etc). it does this directly to get around the fact that both sides are obviously going to be lying about their own casualties and inflating those of the other side. the casualty rate provided by mediazona is somewhat of an underestimate though as it doesn't include the DPR/LPR militias etc, so it's likely to be a bit higher than that, but not much more.

it would be extremely unlikely ukraine is inflicting more casualties than russia is, as russia has far more artillery and firing capacity, and artillery is the most deadly weapon on a modern battlefield. even if ukraine was 'breaking even' casuality wise (unlikely) that is disasterous for them as the overall russian manpower pool is much greater. ukraine needs to be inflicting a casuality ratio that even the wehrmacht was barely capable of achieving, and the wehrmacht were the most operationally effective army in modern history and perhaps all history; to pretend the ukrainians are somehow as good as the werhmacht was relative to the modern russian army despite having obviously less artillery, no strategic rocket force and a mostly non-operational air force is silly. it's just not likely, though it makes a pretty good story (and that's the whole point).

By number, or quality?

I just realised you didn't cite any casualty estimates. Why not?

You should tell the BBC that. They seem to be unaware.
