What does the paper say?

Well, we certainly know that the human emissions are a small fraction of the natural carbon cycle—trees lose leaves in the fall, the leaves rot and emit CO2. In the spring new leaves form drawing down CO2 from the atmosphere. Our emissions, says the author of the paper, are 4% of the natural carbon cycle and we know 60% of that is absorbed mainly by oceans and some by plants.

Our emissions, however, are not recycled—they remain in the atmosphere and accumulate.

We also know CO2 content of the oceans is rising because the oceans are acidifying. Our emissions have a known isotopic make up but the paper didn’t measure it.

We have known since the 1850s that CO2, CH4 and water vapor absorb IR, the IR emitted by the surface. So more CO2 means less IR reaching space meaning warming.
